The University of New Mexico hosted the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship on Friday, March 10, at the Albuquerque Convention Center in New Mexico.
Among athletes competing was Eastern Michigan University senior Newlyn Stephenson, the only Eagle present at the event.
Stephenson is the first thrower from EMU’s track and field program to compete in the weight throw event three times on the national level.
In 2021, he placed 16th with a toss of 19.32m and in 2022 with a throw of 21.52m, he placed 11th.
To end his indoor track and field career, the Indiana native placed seventh in the weight throw event on Friday with his best throw being 22.32 meters, earning him United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association First Team All-American honors for the first time.
Now that that indoor season has officially concluded, EMU is scheduled to begin their outdoor season on March 17 at the Black and Gold Invitational hosted by the University of Central Florida.
