A former familiar face around Washtenaw County will be returning to the area once again as the University of Michigan announced the hiring of Dusty May.
May takes the job just hours after his eighth-seeded Florida Atlantic University team suffered a loss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Northwestern on Saturday, March 23. FAU finished the 2023-24 season with a record of 25-9.
After six years at the helm of FAU’s basketball team, May led the Owls to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances the past two seasons, which included the historic Final Four run in 2023. May departs FAU with an overall record of 126-69 while posting six winning seasons after the Owls failed to finish above .500 in seven years before his arrival.
May will now take over the position that was once held by Juwan Howard, who was fired from his duties earlier this month after an 8-24 season with the Wolverines. Howard finished his head coaching debut with an overall record of 87-72 in five seasons.
"The University of Michigan is among the elite institutions in the world and it is both an honor and privilege to be named its men's basketball coach," May said in a statement released by Michigan basketball's Instagram account. "This was an incredibly difficult decision, however, I am deeply committed to reigniting the proud tradition of Michigan Basketball. I can't wait to get started."
The journey of coaching began for May when he served as a student manager at Indiana University under the legendary Bob Knight from 1996 to 2000.
May would then land his first assistant coaching gig at Eastern Michigan University for the 2005-2006 season before making stops at Murray State University, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), and Louisiana Tech University.
In 2015, May took an assistant coaching position at the University of Florida where he served from 2015 to 2018 before taking the FAU job.
