Eastern Michigan women’s lacrosse dispatches Akron 16-12, clinches MAC Tourney birth

Easter Sunday 2025 was a productive day for the Eastern Michigan University women’s lacrosse team.

Led by five goals from Tracy Grollman (Annapolis, Maryland) and four from Emerson Henry (Ashburn, Ontario), the home squad held off the Akron University Zips in a back-and-forth affair at Scicluna Field, 16-12, securing their spot in this year’s Mid-American Conference Tournament.

The Eagles started the afternoon on a heater, scoring five goals in the opening period and holding a three-goal advantage over the Zips heading into the second quarter. However, Akron would refuse to go down without a fight.

Six goals in the second quarter from Akron suddenly put Eastern Michigan on the back foot. The Eagles entered halftime trailing 8-7.

Grollman was the key catalyst who helped the Eagles stop the bleeding, scoring both goals for the green and white in the second period, including a critical one coming with just five seconds remaining in the half.

Grollman came out of the halftime break and went right back to work, putting two more into the back of the net to start the third frame and match her career high of goals scored in a game. She took the lead for the Eagles, this time 9-8.

The two MAC foes would match each other in the third period with four goals apiece, Akron snatching the lead back with just three seconds remaining in the quarter thanks to their buzzer-beater. However, the final frame was where the Eagles would shine.

A 5-0 run in the fourth quarter enabled Eastern Michigan to pull away with the victory, Henry scoring the program’s 500th goal with 4:17 seconds remaining as the exclamation point on the win that locked up a conference tournament berth and the most that the green and white have ever scored in a season.

With the triumph, Eastern Michigan improved to 8-7 (4-2 MAC) on the campaign, while Akron fell to 8-7 (3-2 MAC) heading into the final game of the regular season.

Next week, the Eagles conclude their regular season at home in a nonconference showdown against Marquette University on April 25, 2025 at noon. Eastern Michigan will be celebrating senior day at Scicluna Field with seniors Grollman, Savannah Berner, Avery Schwab and Laurelle Weisbrod all being honored for their program contributions.
