Cole Snyder

Eastern Michigan football’s Cole Snyder, Trey Laing further pro careers in the CFL

Just a few short weeks ago, last year’s Eagles starting quarterback Cole Snyder received a mini-camp offer with the Detroit Lions, getting a chance to show off his talents for the NFL’s home-state team.

Now, he’ll be furthering his playing career across the border in the Canadian Football League.

Snyder has signed a contract to play with the Edmonton Elks, made official on Monday as the team ramps up for their regular season opener on June 7, 2025.

The Lakewood, New York native and former Rutgers and Buffalo transferee started all 12 games for Eastern Michigan last season. He threw for 2,684 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions. Snyder also ran for 323 yards and four scores on the ground.

Trey Laing Drafted by Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Becoming the 21st player in Eastern Michigan history to be drafted into the CFL, Trey Laing was picked in the seventh round of the April 29 selection process by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Laing, the 63rd overall pick in the draft, played in 12 games in 2024, putting up 22 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks.

Having transferred from Southern University and Indiana University before concluding his collegiate days with the Eagles, Laing will follow in his father’s footsteps. According to Eastern Michigan's athletics website, his dad, Tracy, also played in the CFL three decades ago.

Snyder and Laing now both join Justin Jefferson as former Eagles to continue their professional football careers overseas this offseason.

The Canadian Football League regular season kicks off on June 5, 2025.
