Canvas services return after global network outage

After several hours of service disruption on Monday, Oct. 20, 2025, Canvas is back online for users. Canvas is the learning management system used by Eastern Michigan University. The service disruption came after a global connectivity outage from Amazon Web Services.

AWS is the cloud computing division of Amazon that provides web services for private and public clients. AWS has reportedly resolved the connectivity issue, as stated in an update from its service health status dashboard.

"Over time we reduced throttling of operations and worked in parallel to resolve network connectivity issues until the services fully recovered," read the latest update, posted at 6:53 p.m. (shown in the update in Pacific Daylight Time).

The disruption to Canvas services impacted some course functions at EMU, instructors reported.

Earlier today, Amanda Stype, an economics professor at EMU, said the disruption impacted some homework deadlines in her classes.

Dave Pawlowski, a physics instructor at EMU, said he uses Canvas in all three of the classes he teaches. During the disruption, he said he was able to adapt without too much of an effect on his teaching, but some aspects of his work, such as grading, were impacted.

"I wasn't able to do some of the grading that I was hoping to do because I use Canvas to host assignments, so that was postponed a little bit," Pawlowski said.
