Eastern Michigan University will be closed due to inclement weather tomorrow, Jan. 26, 2026, a campus wide alert said.
"Due to the heavy snowfall, hazardous driving conditions and dangerously cold wind chill warnings, Eastern Michigan University will close tomorrow, Monday, Jan. 26, to help ensure the safety of our community," the alert said.
A Winter Weather Advisory is currently issued for the area, including Ypsilanti, now until 12 a.m. on Monday. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. until Jan. 27, 10 a.m. The wind chill is expected to be as low as minus 8 degrees tomorrow during the day, reported the National Weather Service. Scattered snow showers are expected tonight, with scattered flurries before 11 a.m. tomorrow, the forecast said.
All activities including classes, exams, assignment submissions and athletics will be canceled. However, 100% online or asynchronous courses will still continue as regularly scheduled, said a campus-wide email. In addition to not holding classes, employee meetings will be canceled, even if scheduled to occur on Zoom. Employees should refrain from conducting regular, compensable work duties, the email said.
"The guidelines do not apply to certain designated employees who may be required to work on campus due to the 24/7 nature of some campus operations, such as employees who work in the heating plant, physical plant, food service, public safety, WEMU, and other employees within specific areas of the University," the email said.
EMU Department of Public Safety advises students, staff and faculty to sign up for Eagle Alerts, a messaging system offered by the public safety, to stay up to date on campus closures, Matthew Lige said to The Eastern Echo in a previous interview. Lige is the executive director of public safety and chief of police at EMU.
Students and faculty members not yet signed up to receive Eagle Alerts can do so on the EMU website.
"When the University is closed for severe weather, students, faculty and staff should monitor their emich.edu email and the main University website for condition updates," the email said.
University closures can affect coursework and planning, so it is necessary to watch out for communication from professors to stay informed.
