Washtenaw County opens more warming centers during extreme cold

The Washtenaw County Office of Community & Economic Development announced that three county buildings will be opened as warming centers in Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor for Jan. 23, 2026. The announcement came shortly after a cold weather advisory was issued by the National Weather Service for the southeast Michigan area. Windchill temperatures on Friday are expected to drop to as low as 25 degrees below zero, creating conditions for frostbite and hypothermia.

Shelters announced for Jan. 23

The following daytime warming shelters will specifically be available on Friday throughout Washtenaw county, with varying hours during the day.

The Housing Access for Washtenaw County call center will be taking calls to assist people who may be looking for overnight warming referrals at the Robert J. Delonis Center in downtown Ann Arbor. HAWC will remain open on Jan. 23, 2026, despite a full-day closure of non-essential county services. HAWC can be reached during normal business hours at 734-961-1999. After hours, the Delonis Center can be reached directly at 734-662-2829. 

Additional warming shelters

Beyond Jan. 23, 2026, Washtenaw County has regular daytime warming centers located in Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor. The Office of Community & Economic Development recommends calling HAWC with any questions pertaining to warming centers.

On Jan. 22, the government Facebook page for the city of Ypsilanti posted several graphics with additional tips for staying safe in the cold, including dressing in layers, ensuring space heaters are plugged directly into wall outlets and preparing a safety kit. 

The National Weather Service's advisory warns that the coldest temperatures will be reached between the hours of 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Friday night, with below-zero temperatures extending into Saturday morning.
