Eagles fall short on senior night as Bowling Green secures season finale victory

The atmosphere in Ypsilanti was charged with emotion on Friday, March 6, as the Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team took the floor for the final time in the 2025-26 season. It was Senior Night, a traditional time to celebrate the contributions of veterans who have dedicated years to the program. However, the celebration was ultimately dampened by a resilient Bowling Green State University squad, which pulled away in the closing minutes to hand the Eagles a 77-69 defeat.

Honoring the Seniors

Before the opening tip, the EMU community gathered to recognize the careers of Mehki Ellison, Mak Manciel, Addison Patterson, Jon Sanders II, and Cooper Smith. These five individuals were honored in a pregame ceremony, marking the conclusion of their collegiate journeys in the Green and White. While the night was a celebratory send-off, the task at hand remained a difficult one: facing a Bowling Green team that was fighting to improve its standing heading into the MAC Tournament.

Aggression in the paint

The game began as a back-and-forth affair, though Eastern found themselves in an early 19-9 hole. Refusing to let the game slip away, the Eagles ignited a 7-0 run with nine minutes remaining in the first half. This surge was capped off by a three-pointer from senior Mak Manciel, narrowing the deficit to just three points.

Eastern’s strategy focused on interior dominance. The Eagles played a physical brand of basketball, scoring 22 of their 31 first-half points in the paint. This aggressive approach allowed them to overhaul the lead and enter the locker room with a 31-28 advantage at halftime. At the break, EMU was shooting a solid 48.3% from the floor, and it appeared a Senior Night victory was well within reach.

The Falcon response

The second half told a different story, as Bowling Green found its shooting stroke and exploded for 49 points in the final 20 minutes. The Falcons’ offense was spearheaded by Javontae Campbell, who finished with a game-high 22 points, and Sam Towns, who dominated the glass with a staggering 18 rebounds. BGSU managed to flip the script, turning their halftime deficit into a 10-point lead at 60-50.

True to the resilience they showed throughout a challenging season, the Eagles attempted one final comeback. Gregory Lawson II drained a crucial three-pointer to finish a 5-0 run, bringing Eastern within five points at 60-55 with 6:21 remaining on the clock. However, the Falcons responded with poise, outscoring the Eagles the rest of the way to secure the eight-point win.

Statistical leaders and trends

In his final collegiate game, Addison Patterson was the standout performer for Eastern Michigan. The Mississauga, Ontario, native led the team with 21 points and nine rebounds, marking his fifth game of the season with at least 20 points. Braelon Green also contributed significantly against his former school, netting 12 points and averaging 17.0 points per game across the two matchups with the Falcons this year.

Defensively, Godslove Nwabude was a force at the rim, recording four of Eastern’s six blocks. Mohammad Habhab added 11 points and two blocks of his own, extending his streak of recording at least one rejection to 15 straight games. Despite shooting a better overall field goal percentage than Bowling Green (44.1% to 39.4%), the Eagles were undone by their struggles from the perimeter, hitting only 18.8% (3-of-16) of their three-point attempts.

End of an era

The loss brings a close to a difficult campaign for EMU, who finish the season with a 10-21 overall record and a 4-14 mark in Mid-American Conference play. The game also marked the final matchup in a storied rivalry that dates back to 1916; following the loss, Bowling Green now leads the all-time series 60-45.

The program enters a period of significant transition. Just two days after the season finale, the university announced that Eastern Michigan and head coach Stan Heath have mutually agreed to part ways. As the Falcons move on to the MAC Tournament, the Eagles will look toward a new chapter, seeking to rebuild and return to contention in the conference.
