On March 7, 2026, the Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team traveled to Akron, Ohio, to face the University of Akron Zips at James A. Rhodes Arena. The Eagles defeated the Zips 77–62 in the regular season finale, improving their record to 13–16 overall and 6–12 in Mid-American Conference play. The win marked Eastern Michigan’s final game of the season.
Akron takes early lead
The Eagles started the game slowly as Akron jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter. The Zips opened the game with a scoring run and held Eastern Michigan scoreless for several minutes before building a 15–6 lead by the end of the quarter. Four of the six points scored for Eastern Michigan came from guard Ainhoa Cea.
Eastern Michigan struggled offensively in the opening quarter, scoring on just two field goals from within the paint, while the Zips were able to score both in the paint and on the perimeter.
Eastern Michigan began to find its rhythm in the second quarter and slowly cut into Akron’s lead. The Eagles went on a 9–1 run during the quarter and outscored the Zips 18–13, cutting the deficit to 28–24 heading into halftime.
Eagles take control
Eastern Michigan came out strong in the third quarter and quickly shifted the momentum of the game. The Eagles scored the first seven points of the quarter and took their first lead after 3-point shots from Fernanda Ovalle and Brooklyn Thrash. The early run allowed Eastern Michigan to erase the halftime deficit and put pressure on Akron for the first time in the game.
Guard Peyton Hill continued to play a major role offensively during the quarter, scoring several key baskets to keep the Eagles ahead. Forward Sisi Eleko also contributed on both ends of the floor, collecting rebounds and adding points in the paint. The game remained close through the third quarter, but Eastern Michigan held a narrow 50–49 lead entering the final period.
Eastern Michigan’s offense continued to find success throughout the final quarter, with Hill knocking down multiple free throws and Thrash adding a late basket to extend the lead. The Eagles maintained control during the closing minutes and were able to finish the game strong, outscoring the Zips 27-13, which gave Eastern Michigan the win with a final score of 77-62.
Successes
Peyton Hill led the Eagles offensively with 24 points, finishing 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Hill’s scoring effort helped provide consistency for Eastern Michigan throughout the game.
Brooklyn Thrash added 19 points and 10 rebounds to record a double-double, while Sisi Eleko also posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Eleko’s rebounding presence helped Eastern Michigan control the boards and limit Akron’s second-chance opportunities.
Looking ahead
The Eagles were able to finish the season out strong. With this being the last game of the season, Eastern Michigan can now have momentum heading into the off-season as they prepare for 2026-27.
