A pivotal victory at home
In a crucial Mid-American Conference (MAC) showdown, the Eastern Michigan University tennis team delivered a dominant 6-1 performance against the visiting University of Toledo on Sunday, March 22. The match, held at the Chippewa Club in Ypsilanti, served as a turning point for the Eagles, who had faced early challenges in conference play. With this victory, Eastern Michigan improved to 10-8 overall and 1-3 in the MAC, while the Toledo Rockets fell to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in league action.
The victory also reinforced the Eagles' formidable reputation on their home courts. Under Head Coach Ryan Kucera, the team has maintained an impressive 25-3 home record, including a 10-2 mark against MAC opponents at the Chippewa Club. Following the win, Kucera expressed immense pride in his team's resilience, noting that despite a slow start to the MAC season, the squad successfully implemented small tactical changes and maintained a relentless competitive spirit.
Securing the early advantage: Doubles dominance
The momentum shifted in Eastern Michigan’s favor early during the doubles competition. Although the Eagles dropped the initial match at the No. 1 position, where Isabella Barretto and Neha Guru of Toledo defeated Cylova Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya and Lara Diaz Zayas 6-3, the rest of the lineup stepped up to secure the opening point.
At the No. 2 doubles spot, Matilde Parreira and Sabrina Tolstova battled to a 6-4 victory over Anastasia Akuginova and Gaby Rondon. The crucial opening point was officially clinched at No. 3 doubles, where the duo of Iva Daneva and Regina Mendez Carreño secured a 6-3 win against Toledo’s Jone Ibanez and Annika Munson. This victory extended a notable statistical trend: Eastern Michigan has now won 11 consecutive matches when claiming the doubles point under Kucera. Kucera highlighted the team's commitment to staying aggressive through the end of points as the key to their doubles success.
Freshmen Shine in Singles Play
Singles play saw the Eagles sweep five of the six matches, with several true freshmen leading the charge. Sabrina Tolstova continued her exceptional debut season, securing a commanding 6-2, 6-3 victory at the No. 3 position. This win marked her 12th singles victory of the season, moving her to a perfect 4-0 in MAC singles play.
At the No. 1 singles spot, Cylova Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya earned her 13th career victory by defeating JJ Scholten in a hard-fought 6-3, 7-5 match. Meanwhile, Matilde Parreira celebrated a personal milestone at the No. 5 position, earning her first career MAC singles win with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Anastasia Akuginova. Parreira ended the day undefeated, having contributed to victories in both singles and doubles play.
Resilience and streaks snapped
The most dramatic moments of the afternoon occurred at the No. 2 and No. 4 singles positions, where veteran resolve helped snap difficult losing streaks. Pehal Kharadkar ended a four-match skid by persevering through a three-set marathon at No. 2 singles. After taking the first set 6-4 and dropping the second 0-6, Kharadkar regained her composure to dominate the final set 6-2.
At the No. 4 spot, Lara Diaz Zayas snapped a nine-match losing streak with a gritty comeback victory. After losing a tight first-set tiebreak 6-7(4), Diaz Zayas roared back to win the second set 6-2 and eventually took the match in a 10-7 tiebreak in the final set. Toledo’s lone point of the day came at the No. 6 position, where Annika Munson defeated Regina Mendez Carreño in straight sets.
Historical context and the path ahead
This 6-1 triumph carries historical significance for the program, as it marks the first time since 2004 that the Eagles have posted back-to-back home wins over Toledo. Eastern Michigan now leads the all-time series against the Rockets 34-17. Kucera praised the team's discipline, noting that they had to "earn everything" against a disciplined Toledo program by remaining composed and sticking to their tactics.
The Eagles will look to build on this momentum as they continue their home stand. Eastern is scheduled to host the University at Buffalo Bulls on Friday, March 27. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. at the Chippewa Club in Ypsilanti.
