Mens Baseball 3/25/23

Eagles overcome five-run deficit in thrilling walk-off victory

In a display of resilience at Oestrike Stadium on Tuesday, March 24, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team rallied from a deep mid-game deficit to stun Youngstown State University with an 8-7 walk-off win. The victory marks the first time this season the Eagles have put together a three-game winning streak, a feat the program had not achieved since sweeping Akron in March 2025.

Early struggles and the Penguin surge

The afternoon did not begin in Eastern’s favor, as Youngstown State looked poised to run away with the contest early on. The Penguins' Teddy Ruffner proved to be a significant problem for the EMU pitching staff, launching solo home runs in both the third and sixth innings. By the middle of the sixth inning, Youngstown State had capitalized on extra-base hits and a passed ball to build a commanding 6-1 lead.

Eastern Michigan's offense, which had been stifled for much of the early going, finally found life in the bottom of the sixth. The rally began when Nick Weaver ignited the dugout with a single through the right side. After the Eagles loaded the bases, Tristan Crane was hit by a pitch to force in a run, and freshman Demir Heidelberg followed with a clutch two-run single to second base, narrowing the gap to 6-4.

Heidelberg and Crane lead the charge

The Penguins managed to tack on another run at the top of the seventh via a wild pitch, pushing their lead to 7-4, but the Eagles refused to go quietly. In the bottom of the eighth, the comeback intensified. Drew Jones, who tied a career-high with three walks during the game, crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Crane.

With the pressure mounting, Heidelberg delivered once again, lining a two-run single to left field that drove in Phillip Thigpen and TJ Williams to knot the score at 7-7. This performance capped a career day for Heidelberg, who finished with four RBIs and extended his current hitting streak to six games.

The drama reached its peak in the bottom of the ninth. Keegan Knupp, who recorded his third multi-hit game of the season, reached base and advanced to third, setting the stage for the finale. After the Penguins’ pitching staff struggled with command, the bases were loaded for Crane. Showing immense discipline at the plate, Crane drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the winning run, completing the 8-7 comeback. Crane finished the day with a career-high three RBIs without recording a hit, driving runs in via a hit-by-pitch, a sacrifice fly, and the final walk.

Defensive grit and relief excellence

While the bats provided the late-inning heroics, the EMU bullpen provided the stability necessary for the rally. Greg Kennedy earned his first career NCAA Division I win, tossing two scoreless innings to close out the game. Kennedy struck out a career-high three batters and has now posted back-to-back scoreless outings.

The pitching staff as a whole combined for 10 strikeouts, marking the fourth time this season the team has reached double digits in that category. Aidan Norris also contributed to the effort, posting his fourth consecutive scoreless appearance.

Historical milestones and looking ahead

The win was statistically significant for several reasons. Eastern Michigan displayed aggressive baserunning, swiping a season-high six bases, including two each from Devan Zirwas and Drew Jones. The team also showed great plate discipline, drawing a season-high 10 walks while striking out only five times.

Historically, this victory evens the all-time series between Eastern Michigan and Youngstown State at 3-3. It also pushes EMU’s all-time record against Horizon League opponents to 59-40.

The Eagles (7-17, 2-7 MAC) will look to carry this momentum into a critical three-game conference series. Eastern hosts Central Michigan University at Oestrike Stadium starting Friday, March 27, at 3 p.m.
