Eastern Michigan men’s golf placed second at the All-American Intercollegiate, a tournament held in Humble, Texas. The tournament was hosted by the University of Houston and included 16 teams. The Eagles managed to secure a second-place finish in the tournament.
Round one
Eastern Michigan ended in second place as the first round of play came to an end. The Eagles had a round one score of 14 strokes over par, only trailing Arkansas and their score of 10. The Eagles' round one finish was led by Robby Turnbull and Leo Mihaich. Out of 80 participants, Turnbull finished round one in fourth place, and Mihaich was right behind, finishing in fifth. The other Eagles finished strong, also with every Eagle finishing the round scoring within the top 25, giving the team a well-balanced start to the tournament.
Round two
Round two was an even better overall performance for Eastern. The Eagles managed to drop from a round one score of 14 strokes over par to a round two score of just nine. Mihaich led the Eagles in round two, finishing in sixth with a score of just one over par. Turnbull was not far behind as he finished in eighth, being just two over par. Eagle Joshua Hess ranked 15th in round two, scoring three over par, down from his round one finish of five over. The Eagles once again finished in second as Tarleton State won the round, being eight over par, just one better than the Eagles.
Round three
Round three was the best round for the Eagles as the team finished only seven strokes over par, their best score of the tournament. The improvement was overcome by massive refinements in the other teams, such as the University of Nebraska, Sam Houston State University, and Texas State University, causing the Eagles to finish in seventh-place in round three. Houston and Arkansas tied for the best score in round three, each being three below par.
After three rounds of competition, the Eagles found themselves in second-place; the only team ahead of the Eagles was the University of Arkansas, which, heading into the event, was ranked fourth nationally. Heading into the event, Arkansas was ranked fourth nationally.
Tournament successes
Leo Mihaich and Robby Turnbull tied for eighth place. Turnbull has had an outstanding freshman season so far. This was his second-consecutive top 10 finish. Freshman Joshua Hess also has been making a name for himself; this invitational, his third-consecutive top 15 finish.
Looking ahead
The next stop for the Eastern Michigan men’s golf team will be Napa, California, as they will be competing in the Bridgestone Collegiate, an event hosted by Central Michigan. The event will take place over March 23-24.
