EMU Track and Field opens outdoor season with record-breaking weekend

A split-squad start to the season

Eastern Michigan University (EMU) officially launched its 2026 outdoor track and field season with a strategic split-squad effort during the weekend of March 26-28. The team divided its roster between the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational in Coral Gables, Florida, and the prestigious Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, North Carolina. This ambitious opening schedule allowed the Eagles to test their mettle against diverse and high-level competition, ultimately yielding a combined total of 22 personal bests and seven marks that now rank within the program's all-time top 10.

Sprint dominance in the Sunshine State

The Hurricane Collegiate Invitational was the stage for several standout performances, particularly from the men’s sprinting core. The 4x400m relay team, composed of Olawole Olanrewaju, Bamidele Ajayi, Jamyle Anderson, and Tajay Roberts, made a statement by finishing second overall with a time of 3:11.14. Their performance was particularly impressive as they finished just behind powerhouse LSU.

Individual success followed the relay's momentum. Bamidele Ajayi secured fifth place in the 400m dash (46.95), while Tajay Roberts and Olanrewaju also broke into the top 10, with Roberts clocking a personal best of 47.58. Jamyle Anderson made a splash in his outdoor debut, claiming seventh place in both the 100m (10.71) and 200m (21.48), setting personal bests in both. On the hurdles front, Leo Ignacio advanced from the 110m hurdles prelims with a personal best of 14.62 before taking fifth in the final.

Field events rewrite the record books

The field events in Coral Gables proved to be a goldmine for program records. On the women’s side, Mariah Taylor continued her dominance in the triple jump, leaping 12.65m (41-06.00). This mark not only earned her success at the meet but also placed her No. 4 in EMU program history. Savannah Breitwiser was equally effective, setting a personal best in the shot put (13.65m) to rank No. 5 all-time at EMU, while her discus throw of 42.75m earned her the No. 6 spot in program history.

The men’s throwers also made their mark. Leland Godfrey threw a personal-best 16.96m (55-07.75) in the shot put, which now ranks No. 9 in the program record books. In the discus, Ray Glory-Ejoyokah and DeMarrio Roetherford both entered the all-time top 10, taking spots No. 8 and No. 10, respectively. Jake McEachern added to the tally with a third-place finish in the hammer throw, tossing a mark of 63.19m.

Distance prowess at the Raleigh Relays

While the sprinters and throwers thrived in Florida, EMU’s distance runners found success in the deep fields of the Raleigh Relays. Kian Wiles led the charge for the men in the 1500m, finishing 12th overall with a time of 3:41.79. Jimmy Geller showcased remarkable versatility and endurance, setting personal bests in both the 800m (1:50.51) and the 1500m (3:49.02). Additionally, Sam Peterson achieved a new personal best in the 5000m, crossing the line at 14:27.45.

The EMU women were represented strongly by Sophie Emin, who set a new personal best in the 800m with a time of 2:10.40. Christiana Coleman also delivered solid performances, competing in both the 1500m (4:36.98) and the 800m (2:14.45).

Looking ahead to in-state action

The Eagles will not have long to rest after their high-flying start. The team is scheduled to return to Michigan for a dual-meet weekend starting Friday, April 3. Part of the squad will head to East Lansing for the Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State University, while others will compete in the Golden Grizzlies Invitational at Oakland University on Saturday, April 4. Given the momentum from the opening weekend, fans can expect the Eagles to continue challenging their own records as the outdoor season intensifies.
