Raising the bar: Kyrie Lowe and Macy Nihart lead EMU Gymnastics into postseason glory

As the winter chill begins to fade in Ypsilanti, the heat is just turning up for the Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team. On Tuesday, March 17, the Mid-American Conference (MAC) league office delivered a sweep of good news for the Eagles, naming senior Kyrie Lowe the MAC Gymnast of the Week. This announcement comes on the heels of a dominant regular-season finale that saw Lowe earn a spot on the All-MAC Second Team, while standout newcomer Macy Nihart was named to the All-MAC Freshman Team.

A senior season for the record books

For Kyrie Lowe, a native of Lake Worth, Florida, the 2026 season has been a masterclass in consistency and peak performance. Lowe, who has served as Eastern Michigan’s sole all-around competitor this year, has carried the weight of the program on her shoulders with poise. Her recent recognition as Gymnast of the Week marks the first time an EMU gymnast has captured the weekly honor this season.

The pinnacle of her recent performance came during a Sunday matinee against Kent State on March 15. Lowe delivered a breathtaking 9.900 on the balance beam, a score that not only secured her a first-place finish in the event but also marked the first time any Eastern gymnast reached the 9.900 threshold this season. This routine stood as the highest beam score recorded by any senior in the MAC throughout that entire weekend of competition.

Breaking personal bests on the big stage

Lowe’s journey to the top of the conference standings has been defined by a series of escalating career bests. Just two days before her stellar beam routine, Lowe faced off against national powerhouses No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 10 Michigan. In that high-pressure environment, she recorded a career-best all-around score of 39.175.

However, records are meant to be broken—even if they are only 48 hours old. Against Kent State, Lowe eclipsed her own mark with a new career-high all-around score of 39.200. Throughout the regular season, Lowe has claimed nine individual event titles and maintained a 39.000 all-around average, firmly establishing her as one of the elite gymnasts in the region and earning her All-MAC Second Team honors. Her versatility is her greatest weapon, as she holds career highs of 9.775 on vault and 9.850 on floor to go along with her near-perfect beam marks.

The future is bright: Macy Nihart’s impact

While Lowe represents the seasoned leadership of the Eagles, freshman Macy Nihart represents the program's ascending future. Nihart, hailing from East Lansing, Michigan, has been a "steady contributor" since the moment she arrived on campus. Competing in every meet this season, Nihart eventually worked her way into the vault, beam, and floor lineups.

Nihart’s specialty has undoubtedly been the floor exercise. She finished the regular season with a 9.790 average on the floor, earning her a well-deserved spot on the All-MAC Freshman Team. Her impact was felt most during the Eagles' highest-scoring meets; she posted a 9.800 on floor during the team’s season-best performance (195.225) against George Washington, Fisk, and Towson. She matched that 9.800 against Oklahoma and Michigan, proving that the freshman is not intimidated by elite competition. Her career-high 9.825 on floor against Kent State was the second-highest score by any freshman in the MAC that weekend.

Team momentum toward Bowling Green

The individual accolades for Lowe and Nihart are reflections of a team that is peaking at exactly the right moment. The Eagles have seen their team scores climb steadily, recording their third-highest score of the year during the Oklahoma/Michigan tri-meet. The team’s beam rotation, led by Lowe’s 9.900, also reached a season-high 49.000 against Kent State.

Now, the focus shifts to the postseason. Eastern Michigan is set to travel to Bowling Green, Ohio, for the Mid-American Conference Championships at the Stroh Center on Saturday, March 21. With the meet scheduled for 2 p.m., the Eagles will look to capitalize on the momentum generated by their senior leader and their freshman phenom. As the regular season concludes, the message from the gym is clear: the Eagles are ready to fly.
