A historic defensive stand in Nashville
On a Wednesday afternoon at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex, the Eastern Michigan University (EMU) lacrosse team faced a relentless offensive barrage from Vanderbilt University. While the scoreboard eventually favored the Commodores 11-8, the story of the day was the extraordinary resilience of the Eagles’ defense, led by a legendary performance from junior goalkeeper Maddy Porter. Porter recorded a program-record 21 saves, a feat that not only shattered her own previous records but also marked the highest single-game save total in NCAA Division I for the 2026 season at that time.
The Eagles entered the contest at 5-2, looking to close out their four-game road trip on a high note. Facing an aggressive Vanderbilt squad that fired a staggering 47 shots compared to Eastern’s 20, Porter was forced to be at her best from the opening whistle. Her 21 saves surpassed her previous career high of 20. By the end of the match, Porter sits at third in the national rankings for total saves in the 2026 season, her season total currently at 75.
Offensive milestones and early momentum
The game began as a defensive stalemate, with both teams struggling to find an opening amidst several early turnovers. Vanderbilt finally broke the ice at the 7:29 mark of the first quarter, but the Eagles responded with poise. Porter initiated an attack with a long clear that allowed Emerson Henry to find Mackenzie Blackwell, who tied the game at 1-1 with 3:41 remaining in the opening stanza. Moments later, Henry drove inside to score an unassisted goal, giving EMU a 2-1 lead heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter saw a shift in momentum as the Commodores orchestrated a four-goal run to take a 5-2 lead. However, the Eagles refused to go away quietly. Emma Reichert halted the run by finding the top right corner of the net for her third goal of the year. History was made just before halftime when Tracy Grollman delivered a flip pass to Blackwell for a goal with only 14 seconds left on the clock. This assist was the 46th of Grollman’s career, officially making her the program’s all-time leader in assists, surpassing the previous record held by Avery Schwab. Porter’s brilliance was also on display as the half closed, recording two saves in the final four seconds to keep the deficit at a single goal, 5-4, at the intermission.
The Commodores pull away
The third quarter proved to be a defensive grind. Vanderbilt managed the only two goals of the period, extending their lead to 7-4. Despite the score, Porter continued to keep the Eagles within striking distance, recording four saves in the period to bring her game total to 17.
In the final frame, Emerson Henry briefly cut the lead to 7-5 with an unassisted goal at the 13:31 mark, continuing her impressive streak of scoring multiple goals in three consecutive games. However, Vanderbilt responded with another surge, pushing their advantage to 9-5. Reichert added her second goal of the day to make it 9-6, but the Commodores answered with two more scores to effectively seal the game at 11-6 with just over a minute remaining.
Fighting until the final whistle
True to their competitive spirit, the Eagles fought until the final seconds. Kyleigh Dill scored off a pass from Grollman with 40 seconds left, marking her fourth consecutive game with a goal. Then, with only four seconds remaining, Mackenzie Blackwell secured her 35th career hat trick with an unassisted goal. Blackwell finished the day with four points, bringing her career total to 192 and placing her just eight points away from becoming the first player in EMU history to reach the 200-point milestone.
While the loss dropped the Eagles to 5-3 on the season, the game was a testament to the program's growing talent and individual excellence. The Eagles finished their road trip 2-2 and prepared to return to Ypsilanti for their first outdoor home game of the season against Cincinnati.
