Virtual African American Authors Book Discussion Group — April 28, 2026

Join community members for a virtual discussion of "King of Ashes," a novel by African American author S. A. Cosby. The Ypsilanti District Library will host this discussion via Zoom on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, from 7-9 p.m. The event is free, and no registration is required. According to Goodreads, "King of Ashes" is a crime novel and mystery thriller published in 2025. In the novel, Roman Carruthers is a financial adviser in Atlanta who has left behind his family's crematory business in Virginia. Everything changes when he gets a call from his sister Neveah informing him that their father has been in a hit-and-run accident and is now in a coma. Roman's brother Dante is also in deep debt to dangerous criminals, and Roman must try to protect his family while also dealing with another mystery — the disappearance of the Carruthers siblings' mother when they were teenagers.

Friends of YDL Book Sale — April 30 - May 3, 2026

Looking for a new book to read? Stop by the Friends of YDL Book Sale, which will take place at the Whittaker branch of the YDL at 5577 Whittaker Road from Thursday, April 30, through Sunday, May 3, 2026. Hardcover and oversize paperback prices are $1, while children's books are 25 cents, and mass market paperbacks are 50 cents. On Sunday, May 3, bags of books will be available for $5, and some books will be available at discounted prices.

The sale's hours are 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 30; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, May 1; 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 2; and 1-3 p.m. Sunday, May 3. The Thursday sale is a preview that is only open to Friends of YDL members; however, attendees can purchase Friends memberships at the door. (The Friends of YDL page on the library website states that the Friends of YDL is a membership-based organization with the goals of increasing community interest in the library and raising funds to help the YDL improve its services.)

Retro House Vibes: Washtenaw Funk & Disco — May 1, 2026

Students looking for a way to celebrate the end of final exams may be interested in checking out Retro House Funk & Disco Night. On Friday, May 1, 2026, the Rhizome Roots Studio will host this event at 10 p.m. Attendees can dance and enjoy music courtesy of DJ hosts Evan Oswald and Gemstone James.

May Eraser Print Class — May 2, 2026

Feeling creative? Try this print class at Ypsi Art Supply. On Saturday, May 2, 2026, instructor Jess of Dandylion Design will host a printmaking class in the Y.A.S. Classroom from 1-4 p.m. Attendees will carve a design into an eraser, then print it onto a new pencil pouch. Those interested can register in advance on the Ypsi Art Supply website or drop in the day of the class. All materials will be provided.

The class is open to anyone 12 and older. Younger children will need to work with an adult on carving their designs.

The pricing for the May Eraser Print Class is based on how many pencil pouches attendees purchase. Each pouch costs $15.

Bursting Bubble Awareness Walk — May 3, 2026

On Sunday, May 3, 2026, Ypsilanti resident Maria Douthat will be partnering with national organization Chasing the Rainbows to host an awareness walk in Prospect Park in honor of Bereaved Mother's Day, which is May 3. Facebook Events states that this walk will honor anyone who is experiencing grief related to infertility, miscarriage, stillbirth, infant loss, or the loss of a mother or child of any age. The event aims to uplift and provide connection and support to those who are grieving.

The Bursting Bubble Awareness Walk will take place from 2-4 p.m., and Prospect Park is at 550 N. Prospect Road, Ypsilanti.

Allie Beecher

Allie Beecher uses she/her pronouns, and has worked for The Eastern Echo since August 2024. She started as a copy editor, then moved to Copy Desk Chief in the 2025 summer semester. Beecher is a junior double majoring in Business and Public Relations. 

Her job entails supervising The Echo’s copy editing team, ensuring all the content is error-free, and reviewing all work to make sure it follows AP style guidelines. For her, the best part is being able to use her skills to make a difference in the EMU and Ypsilanti community.
