The Eastern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving program has long been a pillar of consistency in Ypsilanti, but the spring of 2026 has seen the Eagles reach a remarkable peak in scholar-athlete achievement. In a span of just five days, the program was recognized both regionally and nationally, as 14 different student-athletes were honored for their ability to balance the grueling demands of Division I aquatic sports with a rigorous commitment to their studies.
The wave of accolades began on April 2, when the Mid-American Conference (MAC) unveiled its 2025-26 Academic All-MAC Team. A total of 14 Eagles earned their place on this list, contributing to a conference-wide total of 151 recognized student-athletes. The criteria for this distinction are purposefully high: athletes must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher and have participated in at least 50 percent of the season's scheduled contests. Furthermore, the honor is reserved for those who have established themselves at their institution, as first-year students and first-year transfers are ineligible for the award.
The academic diversity within this group is a significant point of pride for the university. Leading the team with perfect 4.0 GPAs were junior Emma Littrell, a Simulation/Animation and Gaming major, and junior Lucy Noble, who studies Digital Media Production. They were joined by several teammates pursuing technically demanding and healthcare-oriented degree programs. Senior Ali Kudo maintained a near-perfect 3.98 GPA in Neuroscience Interdisciplinary, while sophomore Rose Kendrick achieved a 3.96 in Physics-Engineering.
The program’s commitment to academic rigor was further evidenced by the inclusion of nursing and science standouts such as junior Sophie Gatrall (3.55 in Nursing), sophomore Aisling Gutierrez (3.92 in Biology), and junior Tristen Mina (3.63 in Biology). The full list of Academic All-MAC honorees also featured Nina LaRosa (3.94 in Exercise Science), Cate Migliori (3.81 in Elementary Early Childhood Teaching), Taityn Speier (3.83 in Marketing), Sydney Ulmer (3.74 in Interior Design), Azra Umut (3.55 in Psychology), Nehir Guven (3.31 in International Affairs), and Nehir Oz (3.28 in Digital Media Production).
The celebration of the program’s excellence reached a national scale on April 7, when College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced the 2025-26 Academic All-District selections. This elite award is even more selective, requiring a minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA and high-level athletic benchmarks, such as a top-eight finish at a conference championship or participation in a national meet.
Four Eagles met this stringent national standard: Aisling Gutierrez, Nina LaRosa, Tristen Mina, and Azra Umut. For each of these women, the honor represents the first CSC Academic All-District recognition of their collegiate careers. Their inclusion on the list was cemented by their standout performances at the MAC Championships, where all four reached the podium finals. Nina LaRosa led the contingent athletically with a fourth-place finish in the 100y breaststroke finals. Tristen Mina and Azra Umut both secured seventh-place finishes in the 100y butterfly and 500y freestyle finals, respectively, while Aisling Gutierrez clinched her spot with an eighth-place finish in the 3m diving finals.
These honors serve as a fitting capstone to a competitive season that saw the Eagles wrap up their campaign at the CSCAA National Invitational Championships and the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in mid-March.
