In the world of collegiate tennis, few debut seasons have resonated as strongly as that of Cylova Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya. A 5-foot-1 freshman from Serang, Indonesia, Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya arrived at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) and immediately established herself as a cornerstone of the program. On April 22, 2026, her exceptional inaugural campaign was officially recognized when the Mid-American Conference (MAC) named her the 2026 MAC Freshman of the Year and a member of the All-MAC First Team.
These honors place her in an elite tier of EMU history. She is only the 23rd different player in program history to earn a First Team All-MAC selection. Even more significant is her Freshman of the Year title; Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya is the first Eastern Michigan player in 13 years to be voted either Player of the Year or Freshman of the Year by the MAC head coaches, following in the footsteps of Klara Supejova in 2013.
Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya’s accolades are the result of a season defined by rapid ascent and high-stakes consistency. She finished her first collegiate year with a 17-9 singles record and a combined 26 total wins between singles and doubles play. Her season began with a dominant 4-0 start, and she quickly reached a 7-1 record while dropping only seven games across six sets during one stretch of the spring schedule. This performance led to her elevation to the No. 1 singles position, where she posted a 9-7 record, including a perfect 5-0 mark in home contests.
Her impact was most visible during conference play, where she went 6-2 at the top spot. Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya proved she belonged among the league's best by defeating established stars, including JJ Scholten of Toledo, the 2025 MAC Freshman of the Year, and Esmee Andresen of Buffalo, a 2025 All-MAC First Team selection. Her back-to-back victories against Bowling Green and Toledo not only earned her MAC Singles Player of the Week honors but also helped the Eagles defeat Toledo at home in consecutive meetings for the first time in over two decades.
The freshman’s resilience was evident even in her rare setbacks. One of her only conference losses came against the 2026 MAC Player of the Year, Ella Faessler of UMass, in a grueling three-set match. Head Coach Ryan Kucera highlighted this tenacity, stating, "I am beyond proud of Cylova for her effort and competitive spirit this year... Not only is she a fantastic player, but she gave great effort every day, on and off the court".
Historically, Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya joins an exclusive group of four Eagles to ever win a MAC freshman or newcomer award, alongside Simone Duhme (1998), Rebecca Hawkins (2000), and Klara Supejova (2013). Her first-team selection also ensures that EMU continues its longest streak of top-tier honors since the early 2000s, marking the fourth consecutive year an Eagle has been named to the All-MAC First Team.
By blending technical skill with a relentless competitive drive, Cylova Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya has not only honored the traditions of Eastern Michigan tennis but has set a new standard for the future. As Coach Kucera noted, the program is "so excited for her future" as she looks to build upon this historic freshman foundation.
