On April 1, 2026, a medical emergency caused a student to accelerate and hit a nearby lamp post.

The Ypsilanti Fire Department and EMU Police both responded to the scene minutes after the accident. The driver was taken in an ambulance with no serious injuries.

“There was major damage to the light pole and the driver’s car, and minor damage to the cars around it. Nobody was seriously injured,” Ypsilanti Fire Department Lieutenant Gissendaner told The Eastern Echo.

Student Kayden Lumley witnessed the accident. “I was about to turn, but then her car didn’t stop. I just saw her hit the lamp post, and it tipped over and the light broke off and hit the window of another car,” Lumley said.

Lumley and other bystanders helped the driver and noted she seemed unwell.

“I ran over there, and there were a few people that came to help. We were trying to talk to her, but she wasn’t really responding at first. I think she was just in shock. Me and someone else helped her out of her car," Lumely said.

Lumley said that after speaking to the driver, the driver said she felt she was going to black out and did not remember the accident happening.
