On Monday, April 27, 2026, the Mid-American Conference (MAC) announced its Week 11 baseball honors, and one name stood above the rest in the offensive category: Ty Stecko. The Eastern Michigan University (EMU) senior utility man was named the MAC Baseball Player of the Week following a performance that was not only successful but arguably historic for the program. An unprecedented display of power defined Stecko’s week, as he became the first Eagle to win the conference's weekly award this season and the first since March 2025.
Stecko’s numbers tell the story of a standout performance. Across 18 at-bats, he recorded a .500 batting average and a staggering 1.968 OPS. Of his nine total hits, seven went for extra bases, including two doubles and five home runs. This offensive explosion resulted in 10 RBI and 26 total bases, providing the backbone for the EMU lineup during a critical stretch of the season.
The centerpiece of Stecko's week was his four-game home run streak. By homering in every game he played last week, Stecko joined Houston's Cade Climie as the only Division I players in the country with an active four-game home run streak at that time. His power surge has placed him in elite company within the EMU record books; he is the first Eagle to homer in four consecutive games since the 2002 season, when program legends Ryan Goleski and Chad Jenkins achieved similar feats.
The highlight of the weekend occurred during the series against Northern Illinois University (NIU). On Saturday, April 25, Stecko delivered a two-homer game. He followed that performance on Sunday, April 26, by reclaiming momentum for the Eagles in the series finale. With EMU holding a narrow 5-4 lead in the seventh inning, Stecko blasted a two-run home run to right field, extending the lead to 7-4 and helping secure an eventual 9-7 victory. This win was particularly significant as it marked the final conference matchup between the storied rivals and EMU's first road win against a MAC opponent this season.
Beyond the weekly honors, Stecko’s recent performance has significantly bolstered his season and career totals. He now has 10 home runs this season, ranking him second on the team and fourth in the MAC. His career home run count as an Eagle has reached 20 in just 83 games. Furthermore, with 94 career RBI in the NCAA, Stecko is now only six RBI away from reaching the 100-career milestone.
Stecko’s journey to becoming a cornerstone of the EMU offense began in North Huntingdon, Pa, where he was a standout at Norwin High School. A multi-sport athlete, he was named the Pittsburgh 6A Player of the Year during his senior season and played in the Roundball Classic All-Star Game for basketball. Before joining Eastern Michigan, Stecko spent two seasons at Mount St. Mary's, where he was a regular contributor and an exceptional infielder with a .984 fielding percentage in 2024.
Off the field, the senior is a Computer Science major with clear plans for what comes next. Whether that path leads to working in government technology or continuing his baseball career at the next level, he’s positioned himself well through consistent discipline and growth. His rise from transfer to one of the conference’s top power hitters reflects a trajectory that points to plenty of opportunity ahead. In his first season with EMU in 2025, he posted a .325 batting average and a team-high .591 slugging percentage, setting the stage for this year's breakthrough.
As the Eagles prepare to host Washington for Education Day at Oestrike Stadium on April 28, all eyes will be on number 28 to see if he can extend his historic streak. For Ty Stecko, the MAC Player of the Week honor reflects a stretch where he stepped up in a big way, leading the offense and putting together a performance that stands out in the EMU history books.
