Eagles clinch series victory and celebrate senior milestones in 2026 season finale

A masterclass on the mound: Thursday’s shutout

The series began Thursday, May 14, with a display of pitching excellence as four Eastern Michigan hurlers combined for a 4-0 shutout victory. Starting pitcher John Carmichael set the tone by tossing six clean innings, allowing seven hits while striking out five and walking only one batter to earn his third win of the season. The bullpen remained perfect, with Emmett Gillies, Cole Egan and Landon Mueller providing three scoreless innings of relief to seal the program's first shutout since March 2024.

Offensively, the Eagles supported their pitching staff with 11 hits. Ty Stecko was the primary catalyst, driving in three runs, including a two-RBI single in the third inning and an RBI double in the fifth. Tristan Crane also contributed an RBI single to push the lead to 4-0, while Nick Weaver and John Hale added multi-hit performances to the winning effort. Defensively, the Eagles played error-free baseball, stranding 10 Bobcats on base to secure the series-opening win.

The explosive eighth: Friday’s dramatic comeback

The momentum continued into Friday, May 15, though in a much more dramatic fashion. Facing an early 4-0 deficit by the fifth inning, Eastern Michigan appeared to be heading toward a loss before unleashing a massive eight-run outburst in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure a 9-4 victory. This scoring explosion tied the team's season-high for runs in a single inning and marked the 17th time during the season they scored four or more in a frame.

The eighth-inning rally was fueled by Leewood Molessa, who delivered a game-tying two-run double, and Nick Weaver, who smashed his third double of the game to drive in the go-ahead run. Weaver’s performance was historic, as his three doubles set his new NCAA career high. Ty Stecko capped the scoring with a two-run single, elevating his season total to a team-best 45 RBI. Relief pitcher Ethan Davis earned his first win of the season by throwing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts to close the door on the Bobcats. This victory officially secured the series win for the Eagles, their fourth conference series win of the year — all of which occurred at home at Oestrike Stadium.

A bittersweet finale: Senior day milestones

The regular season concluded Saturday, May 16, with a high-scoring 15-7 loss to Ohio. Despite the defeat, the day was defined by a pregame ceremony honoring the 17-man senior class of 2026, which included players such as TJ Williams, Ty Stecko, John Hale and Devan Zirwas, among others.

The offensive highlights were plentiful despite the score. John Hale reached the prestigious 100-career hit mark as an Eagle, achieving the feat with a career-first triple followed by a single. Keegan Knupp turned in a career-best performance, going 4-for-5 at the plate, while Tristan Crane extended his hitting streak to seven games with a 3-for-5 day and three RBI. Although Ohio’s power bats eventually took over with five home runs, Eastern Michigan fought until the end, including a three-run surge in the eighth inning.

Legacy and record-breaking performances

As the 2026 season drew to a close, several Eagles etched their names into the program's record books. Nick Weaver finished the season leading the MAC in runners caught stealing with 28, a figure that ranks second in program history during the modern statistical era and within the top three nationally. Cole Egan made his 24th appearance of the season, tying for the fifth-most in a single season in program history.

From a team perspective, the Eagles demonstrated significant discipline and power. The squad finished with 245 walks, ranking ninth in program history, and their pitching staff combined for 392 strikeouts, the fourth-highest total in Eastern Michigan history. The season ended with a 19-34 overall record and a 12-21 mark in Mid-American Conference play, bolstered by a strong final home stand that highlighted both veteran leadership and emerging talent.
