EMU Men Secure Runner-Up Finish as Women Surge to Fifth at MAC Outdoor Championships

A strong foundation: Program top ten marks on day one

The championships began on Thursday, May 14, at the Briner Sports Complex in Muncie, Ind., with Eastern Michigan recording seven program top-10 marks. The men's team ended the opening day tied for fourth place with 21 points, while the women sat in 10th with two points.

DeMarrio Roetherford led the men’s early efforts by scoring six points with a third-place finish in the discus; his personal-best throw of 53.60 meters (175-10) moved him to fifth all-time in EMU history. In the decathlon, Cason Doolittle ended the first day in fourth place, notably winning the high jump with a clearance of 1.93m (6-04.00), which ranks fourth in the program's decathlon history. Sam Peterson also contributed to the scoreboard with a sixth-place finish in the 10,000m run, clocking in at 30:08.42.

For the women, Faith Moore provided the day's scoring by finishing seventh in the hammer throw. Her career-best mark of 51.96m (170-6) not only earned two team points but also placed her eighth on the program’s all-time outdoor list. Additionally, Shamoya Clemetson ended the first half of the heptathlon in seventh place, bolstered by a win in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.93.

Day two: Climbing the standings and shattering records

On the second day of competition, the Eagles utilized personal bests and deep qualifying performances to improve their positions. The women’s team made a significant leap from 10th to sixth place, while the men maintained their fourth-place standing.

A major highlight of the day came from Cason Doolittle, who broke his own EMU decathlon 1500m record with a winning time of 4:35.54. Doolittle finished the decathlon with 6,196 points, earning five team points, while teammate Julien Badoo added two points with a personal-best javelin throw that ranks ninth in EMU decathlon history. In the field, Jake McEachern secured a second-place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 61.98m (203-4), and Andrew Azunque took fourth in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 7.25m (23-09.50).

The women’s surge was fueled by Savannah Breitwiser, who placed fifth in the shot put with a career-best 14.31m (46-11.5), the third-best mark in EMU history. Shamoya Clemetson finished fifth in the heptathlon and secured a second-place finish in the open long jump with a personal-best 6.14m (20-01.75), ranking her sixth all-time for the program. On the track, Uduak Udosoh advanced to the 400m finals with a time of 53.56, the ninth-fastest in school history.

Championship Saturday: Three MAC titles and final standings

The final day of the championships on Saturday, May 16, saw Eastern Michigan capture three MAC titles. The men’s team finished the meet in second place with 148.5 points, trailing only Akron’s 212 points. The women’s team climbed to fifth place overall with 75 points.

Kian Wiles earned the sole individual title for the men by winning the 1500m in 3:48.30. Wiles also added a third-place finish in the 800m. Other notable men's track performances included Olawole Olanrewaju taking second in the 400m (46.70) and Kayenn Mabin finishing as the runner-up in the 110m hurdles (14.23). The men's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams both secured third-place finishes to bolster the team score.

The women’s squad dominated the relay events, sweeping both the 4x100m and 4x400m titles. The 4x100m team of Saraiah Walkes, Ajah Arscott, Jordynn Young, and Uduak Udosoh won in 45.33, the 10th-best time in program history. The 4x400m unit, featuring Walkes, Udosoh, Josephine Oloye, and Demetria Henderson, claimed victory in 3:38.21. Individually, Oloye and Udosoh finished second and third in the 400m, respectively, with Oloye's time of 53.61 moving her into the program's top 10.

Field success and looking ahead

Field athletes continued to produce on the final day, with Gabriel Oliveira taking third in the men's triple jump (14.63m) and Mariah Taylor claiming fourth in the women's triple jump (12.77m). Following the conclusion of the MAC Championships, qualifying Eagles will prepare for the 2026 NCAA East Prelims scheduled for May 27-30 in Lexington, Ky.
