Eastern Michigan vs Buffalo Women's Tennis

End of an era in Ypsilanti: Head coach Ryan Kucera announces resignation as Eastern Michigan launches national search

On May 18, 2026, the Eastern Michigan University (EMU) athletic department announced a significant transition for its women’s tennis program: Head coach Ryan Kucera has officially resigned. The announcement, made by EMU Vice President and Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee, marks the conclusion of a three-season era characterized by a return to conference relevance and a historic rebuilding of the team’s home-court identity. As the department prepares for a national search to identify the 12th head coach in program history, the legacy Kucera leaves behind is one of statistical milestones and revitalized energy.

Kucera’s journey with the Eagles began August 9, 2023. During his tenure, he compiled an overall record of 34-34 and a 13-18 mark in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play. While his overall win percentage sat at .500, the context of these wins tells a story of a program on the rise. His 34 career victories rank him sixth on the program’s all-time list for head coaches, while his 13 MAC wins place him fifth in school history. Perhaps most importantly for the program’s trajectory, Kucera led the Eagles to the semifinals of the 2024 MAC Championships, marking Eastern Michigan’s first appearance in the conference tournament since 2018.

Consistency was a hallmark of Kucera’s early years. He guided the Eagles to 12 wins in each of his first two seasons, a feat of back-to-back double-digit win totals that the program had not achieved since the 2002-03 and 2003-04 campaigns. Much of this success can be attributed to the "fortress" Kucera built at the Chippewa Club. Under his leadership, the Eagles were nearly unbeatable at home, posting a 25-6 record in Ypsilanti. This dominance was highlighted by a perfect 11-0 home record during the 2023-24 season, which stood as only the fourth undefeated home season in the history of EMU tennis.

Beyond the team standings, Kucera proved to be a masterful developer of individual talent. Throughout his three seasons, he coached players to multiple All-MAC honors, ensuring that Eastern Michigan was represented on the conference’s elite lists every year. Daniella Shved was a standout under his tutelage, earning First Team All-MAC honors in both the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. Kucera’s eye for talent was further evidenced by the recruitment of Cylova Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya, who made an immediate impact in the 2025-26 season. Hukmasabiyya not only earned First Team All-MAC honors but was also named the MAC Freshman of the Year, becoming only the fourth Eagle ever to receive the award and the first since 2013.

Kucera also oversaw the final chapters of two of the most prolific careers in Eastern Michigan history. Sabina Brichackova and Prerna Vichare, a formidable doubles duo, both reached the rare triple-digit win milestone during their senior seasons under Kucera’s watch. Brichackova concluded her career with 119 combined wins, while Vichare reached 100, marking the first time since 2016 that the program added names to its prestigious all-time win list. The pair also finished as runners-up at the 2024 MAC Fall Individuals, a competition that had been absent from the conference calendar for over two decades.

In his parting statement, Kucera expressed deep gratitude to Scott Wetherbee, Associate AD Stacie McMullen and his student-athletes, noting that he is "beyond proud" of the progress made both on and off the court. He leaves the program with the conviction that the "future of Eastern Michigan Tennis is very bright".

As the Eagles look toward the 2026-27 season, the focus remains on the ultimate goal: a MAC championship. Wetherbee emphasized that the search for a new leader will prioritize finding someone who can maintain the program's current upward momentum. For now, the Eagles remain a transition program, but one that is significantly better positioned than it was three years ago.
