Spartans outlast Eagles in East Lansing

On a mild and humid afternoon at Ishbia Field at McLane Stadium, the Eastern Michigan University (EMU) baseball team faced off against Michigan State University (MSU) for their non-conference finale. In front of 211 spectators, the game began as a tightly contested pitching duel, remaining scoreless through the first three innings. EMU’s Henry Slaby and MSU’s Kyle Rudolph set the tone early, with Slaby allowing only two hits over his two-inning start, while Rudolph struck out two and gave up just two hits in three innings of work.

The scoring breakdown

Eagles take the early lead

The deadlock was finally broken in the top of the fourth inning. After Devan Zirwas reached base, Tristan Crane delivered a clutch single down the right-field line, driving in Zirwas to give Eastern Michigan a 1-0 lead. The Eagles' pitching staff, led by Michael Pfeiffer in relief, managed to keep the Spartans off the board through the fifth, maintaining the slim one-run advantage.

The sixth inning shift

The momentum shifted dramatically in the bottom of the sixth inning when Michigan State’s offense came alive. Parker Picot ignited the rally with a solo home run to left field, evening the score at 1-1. The Spartans then turned to "small ball" to take the lead. Ryan McKay executed a bunt single that scored Randy Seymour, followed by another bunt single from Adam Broski that brought home C.J. Deckinga. By the end of the frame, MSU had surged to a 3-1 lead, an advantage they would not relinquish.

Insurance runs and the final rally

In the bottom of the eighth, Michigan State added critical insurance runs. With two runners on, Nick Williams scorched a triple to center field, clearing the bases and extending the Spartan lead to 5-1.

Eastern Michigan attempted a comeback in the top of the ninth against MSU’s Tommy Szczepanski. Bruce Jellison singled up the middle to drive in Tristan Crane, cutting the deficit to 5-2. However, Szczepanski regained his composure, striking out the side to secure his second save of the season and seal the victory for the Spartans.

Pitching and individual performances

The win was credited to MSU reliever Brady Chambers, who improved to 3-3 after pitching 1.2 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. For the Eagles, Jack Angus was saddled with the loss after being charged with the three runs in the pivotal sixth inning.

Offensively, EMU was led by Tristan Crane, who finished the day 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. TJ Williams also contributed two hits, including a double. For Michigan State, Nick Williams was the standout, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a triple. Isaac Sturgess and Randy Seymour also recorded multi-hit games for the Spartans, who outhit the Eagles 12 to 9.

Historical context and series trends

This matchup added another chapter to a long-standing history between the two programs that dates back to March 23, 1999. While Eastern Michigan holds a historical lead in total wins, recorded at 58 wins to 28 losses, the recent years have belonged almost exclusively to Michigan State.

The Spartans are currently on an eight-game winning streak against the Eagles, with EMU’s last victory in the series occurring on April 4, 2017, a narrow 4-3 win at Oestrike Stadium. Over their last ten meetings, MSU has won nine.

Other notable historical data points include:

  • Away Struggles: EMU has historically struggled in East Lansing, carrying a 6-18 away record in the series.
  • Margin of Victory: EMU's largest win remains a 13-5 victory on April 11, 2012.
  • Longevity: The series began in 1999 with a high-scoring 15-13 EMU win.

With this latest loss, Eastern Michigan drops to a 17-33 season record, while Michigan State improves to 20-30. The Spartans' ability to dominate the late innings continues to be the defining characteristic of this regional series in the current era.
