Despite a thoroughly dominant performance in which they controlled nearly every statistical metric, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team was held to a frustrating 0-0 draw against Robert Morris University on Sunday, Aug. 30. Playing in front of an energetic crowd of 521 at the Colonials' home field, the Eagles showcased relentless offensive pressure but ultimately could not find the back of the net, leaving Moon Township with a single point and moving their 2026 season record to 1-1-2 overall.
The Eagles established their territorial dominance and dictated the tempo of the game from the opening whistle. EMU outshot the Colonials by a massive 17-2 margin and earned six corner kicks compared to just one for Robert Morris. More impressively, Eastern Michigan’s defensive unit was so suffocating that they did not allow a single shot on goal, while testing RMU goalkeeper Emma Cameron with six on-target attempts of their own. Yet, despite the lopsided stat sheet, Cameron's stellar six-save performance proved to be the ultimate equalizer to preserve the clean sheet for the home team.
While forwards typically drive a team's offensive engine, this match featured an extraordinary display of attacking prowess from Eastern Michigan’s backline. Defenders Ella Fuller and Gillian Poiesz served as surprise offensive catalysts, transforming their defensive positions into launching pads for relentless pressure. Fuller, hailing from Dublin, Ohio, played 64 minutes and tied for the team lead in shots on goal. She was among EMU's most dangerous threats on the afternoon, twice testing Cameron with high-center shots, first at the 57:13 mark and again in the 78th minute (77:29).
Matching Fuller's aggressive play, defender Gillian Poiesz, of New Providence, N.J., was a constant threat in her 58 minutes on the pitch. Poiesz finished second on the team with four total shots, displaying remarkable efficiency. She forced a critical save from Cameron in the 57th minute with an on-target attempt, demonstrating the tactical freedom EMU's defenders had to push high into the attacking third. Together, Fuller and Poiesz accounted for six of the team's 17 total shots, essentially operating as auxiliary midfielders to pin Robert Morris deep in their own half.
The Eagles' aggressive tone was established early in the match. In the 21st minute, forward Avery Hilvert put the Eagles' first shot on goal with a low-left strike that forced Cameron into a diving save. Forward Olivia Sipsock of Medina, Ohio, also spearheaded the offensive charge, leading all players on both teams with five shots in 63 minutes of action as she constantly unsettled the Colonials’ backline.
The closest either side came to breaking the deadlock occurred in the 64th minute when Ciara Brown unleashed a powerful shot that rattled off the crossbar. In that same frantic minute of play, defender Rosalie Takacsy forced another save from Cameron, completing her 67-minute shift with a shot on goal. Cameryn Susey also registered a shot on goal during her 66 minutes of action, but Cameron's heroics kept the match level.
At the other end of the pitch, EMU goalkeeper Ella Holland enjoyed an exceptionally quiet afternoon. Protected by a rock-solid defense anchored by Reese Carpenter and Christie Fransen, who played the full 90 minutes, Holland faced just two shots and did not have to make a single save to record her second consecutive shutout of the season.
This result continues a historically stingy defensive run for Eastern Michigan, which has conceded only two goals through its first four matches of the 2026 campaign. The draw marks back-to-back road shutouts for the Eagles, following a scoreless tie at No. 3 Michigan State, representing the first time since the 2025 season that EMU has kept opponents scoreless in consecutive away games. Additionally, this is the first time since September 2024, when the Eagles drew against the University of Toledo and Ball State University, that EMU has recorded consecutive scoreless draws.
With this result, EMU maintains its undefeated historic series record against Robert Morris, moving to 1-0-1 all-time. The Eagles will look to convert their offensive opportunities into goals when they return home to host Southern Indiana at Scicluna Field on Sunday, September 6, at 1 p.m.
