On Aug. 28, 2026, at approximately 7:32 p.m., Washtenaw County Sheriff's deputies responded to the 1100 block of Harris Road in Ypsilanti Township to a domestic violence report.
A woman called the police reporting that her boyfriend, a 38-year-old man, had attempted to shoot her, the news release posted on Facebook by the Sheriff's Office said. Deputies learned when arriving at the scene that the man might have still been inside with two children.
Since the man was believed to be armed and had refused to come outside, police established a safety perimeter.
The news release also noted that at approximately 9:39 p.m., while the barricaded-person response remained under investigation and still active, an unrelated vehicle drove through the secured area. The vehicle disregarded police vehicles, caution tape and deputies' commands to stop while driving at a high rate of speed. Police took the driver into custody for disregarding multiple barriers and driving through the active scene.
The news release said that the driver who was arrested is safe, despite claims stating the driver had died. This statement is false, and police ask the public to always verify information before sharing that information. Inaccurate statements are not beneficial for those involved in the incident or the ongoing review, the police stated.
Police proceeded to use a tire-deflation device to disable the vehicle. During the resulting high-risk traffic stop, the driver exited the vehicle and disregarded deputy commands, police said in the news release. The driver appeared to be intoxicated and had children in the vehicle, police said.
The children in the barricaded person incident and the children in the unrelated vehicle incident were safely taken care of and released to family members, the release stated. No injuries were reported by anyone involved, including the unrelated driver, police said in the statement.
Deputies urge the public to never enter or drive through a secure police perimeter during an active police incident. When police are responding to an armed or barricaded person, they use caution tape and have police vehicles positioned to protect the public and emergency personnel from potential dangers, the news release said.
A thorough review of this incident will continue to be underway, the news release stated, and the domestic violence felony assault also remains an open investigation.
