Looking for something to do on and around Eastern Michigan University's campus this week? Here are some local events to attend.
Honors College Book Club — Sept. 23
Been wanting to get back into reading? The EMU Honors College is hosting its first book club meeting for EMU students Wednesday, Sept. 23. Meetings take place in-person at the Honors College but can also be accessed virtually on Zoom.
This is a bi-weekly club that meets from 7-8 p.m. to discuss the current book. The books are voted on by students who are interested in joining the club each semester, the Honors College webpage said. Students must purchase their own copy of the book. Previous books have included "Good Omens" by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, as well as "Six of Crows" by Leigh Bardugo.
Students who are interested in joining are required to fill out a Google Form. Afterwards, students can join the Honors College Book Club GroupMe. Ypsi Trivia — Sept. 24
Think you know everything there is to know about Ypsilanti? Community volunteers, members of the RAC board and Water Tower Distilling Co. have partnered together to organize Ypsi Trivia. The trivia will feature history, fun facts and interesting Ypsi information, the webpage stated.
Those who wish to put their Ypsi knowledge to the test can attend Ypsi Trivia at Water Tower Distilling Co., located at 23 N. Washington St., Ypsilanti, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24. First and second place winners may win a gift card or local swag items.
Tickets can be purchased on the Water Tower Distilling Co. website at $5 a person or $35 for a team of four. Ticket sales benefit the Riverside Arts Center.
EMU Gaming Arena: Find Your Party — Sept. 25
Whether a fan of video games, tabletop RPGs or board games, the EMU Gaming Arena will have something for everyone to enjoy Friday, Sept. 25. Campus Life, ESports, Athletics and Office of Access & Opportunity are teaming up with student organizations and departments to host EMU's first Gaming Convention.
There will also be a Same Page Tutorial session during the event for students to receive tips on making connections with other students. There will be a first come, first served jersey giveaway, as well.
Located on the third floor in room 345 of the Student Center from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m., students can stop by to play games and meet new people. For those who have questions, contact Juniper Bamrick at 734-487-3045 or campuslife@emich.edu.
Tailgate with Ypsi Meals on Wheels — Sept. 26
Ypsi Meals on Wheels will be hosting a community tailgate event in collaboration with EMU Athletics and Zingerman's Community of Businesses Saturday, Sept. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Rynearson Stadium prior to the EMU football game against Lindenwood.
Attendees can expect access to pre-game food stations and non-alcoholic beverages, tailgate games with prizes, games and crafts for kids, a game ticket in reserved group seating neat the 50-yard line and a post-game group photo in the End Zone.
Tickets can be purchased online. Adult tickets cost $40 per ticket, kid tickets cost $18 a ticket and family tickets are $100. All proceeds will go to Ypsi Meals on Wheels to support meal delivery to homebound individuals and seniors with disabilities in Eastern Washtenaw County.
Chefs in the Garden — Sept. 27
Growing Hope is hosting Chefs in the Garden, which is a declaration that Ypsilanti deserves fresh, dignified and culturally rooted food, the webpage stated. Growing Hope believes that young people deserve paid work, real skills and a future in the food economy. Organizers offer an evening of gourmet tastings, the website said, in support of Growing Hope's mission to build food justice in Ypsilanti.
Purchasing a ticket for this event, which can be done on the event's website, supports Growing Hope's urban farm, Teen Leadership Program, community Farmers Market and emergency food access initiatives serving hundreds of families across the Ypsi community. Attendees are encouraged to come to Chefs in the Garden on an empty stomach in preparation for some delicious food.
Chefs in the Garden is at 922 W. Michigan Ave., Ypsilanti, Sunday, Sept. 27 at 5 p.m.
Compete and Connect — Sept. 28
Students who have a Rec/IM membership and who are interested in trying out and joining a sport should attend EMU Intramural Sports' Compete and Connect event. From flag football and soccer to pickleball and euchre, there are many options for students.
Prior to attending, interested participants should review the IM Handbook and sports-specific handbooks for rules and information. To register for the event, students can visit the IMLeagues website.
