Despite holding Alabama A&M to 0/10 from behind the arc and a 33.3% field goal percentage overall, the Eastern Michigan women’s basketball team fell to 0-2 with a 66-57 loss at the George Gervin GameAbove Center on Saturday afternoon.Sisi Eleko (Montreal, Quebec/New Hope Academy/Canisius) continued her electric start to the new year, leading the team with not only double digits in points (17) but also double figures in rebounds as well (16), the junior continuing to shine and establish herself as the leading force on the Eagles. “Sisi [Eleko] stepped up,” head coach Sahar Nusseibeh said. “I knew she could do better defensively and rebounding, so I challenged her, and she really met the challenge,” she added.Brooklyn Thrash (Wayne, Ohio/Elmwood/Canisius) also stepped up in her second game with the team, dropping 15 points and adding five rebounds. At the same time, Olivia Westphal (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park/Duquesne) also contributed a trio of three-pointers to the offensive effort. “Brooklyn [Thrash] stepped up,” Nusseibeh said. “I actually had a conversation with [Thrash] after that first game and said we needed more production, and she gave it to us,” she said. While the game was tied 28-28 at the half, the main difference in the second half was free throws: Alabama A&M shot more free throws in the second half (34) than field goal attempts (20). On the other hand, Eastern Michigan only shot eight free throws during that same span, draining seven of them.Coach Nusseibeh also mentioned fatigue being a significant factor for Eastern Michigan down the stretch and a big contributing factor as to why the Bulldogs were able to pull away late. “I think fatigue affected our focus in terms of turnovers—throughout the second half,” she said. “[We] talked about developing a [winning] mentality, and we just need to develop one,” she added. The Eagles return to action Monday, Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m. when they travel to East Lansing to play the Michigan State Spartans live on the Big Ten Network Plus along with WEMU (89.1 FM) and The Varsity Network.

A whole turkey can often be expensive and hard to manage for even the most experienced of cooks. It can be hard to carve, too, for someone who doesn't know what you’re doing. And if the bird is too big, there will be too many leftovers. This recipe uses a turkey breast, so dark meat lovers are a bit out of luck—but the delicious, moist meat more than makes up for the loss.

The Jalin Billingsley (Cleveland, Ohio/Lutheran East/Georgetown) show was on Friday afternoon at the George Gervin GameAbove Center. In his final home opener, the senior dropped a career-high 32 points and ten rebounds, including 17 in the first half, to give the Eastern Michigan men’s basketball team a much-needed bounce-back victory against Siena Heights, 83-58. “[Jalin Billingsley] was really a big force for us,” Eagles head coach Stan Heath said after the game. Alongside Billingsley, Jalen Terry (Flint, Michigan/Beecher/Oregon/DePaul) and Yusuf Jihad (Farmington Hills, Michigan/North Farmington/Oakland) also both added double figures to the scoreboard with 14 and 10 points respectively, Terry tallying nine rebounds in his near double-double effort. The Eagles also posted an elite defensive effort, holding Siena Heights to a 35.4% field goal percentage (23/65) and a 20.7% mark from behind the arc (6/29). The Saints only scored 25 points the entire second half, a pivotal factor that helped Eastern Michigan pull away down the stretch. “We stopped giving up easy baskets,” Heath said, explaining why the Eagles extended their lead from seven at the half to a game-high of 25 during the closing stages. “I think that triggered offense from our defense, and that’s what kinda gave us more of a cushion, some more transition baskets,” he added. The Eagles improved to 1-1 on the campaign, while Siena Heights dropped to 0-3. Eastern Michigan bounced back strongly from a close loss earlier this week in the season opener against Texas State. “Anytime you shake off the cobwebs from a game you didn’t play so well, that’s good for your psyche,” Heath said. “When you got young players on the team, you want to feel good emotionally,” he added. The Eagles will return to action on Thursday, Nov. 14, at a matchup on the road against IU-Indianapolis, which is awaiting the squad.
