I arrive at the Corner Brewery right around noon. It's a Friday. The tables are spaced out to promote social distancing and 90's grunge is playing in the background, setting the perfect ambience for a afternoon brew. I order a nice and fresh Buzzsaw and slide into a booth far off to the side.

I can smell the coffee brewing inside Cultivate as I walk around the block. It’s located right next to Sidetracks, on the outskirts of Depot Town. As I enter the cafe and taphouse, I immediately hear the sound of Frank Sinatra playing and see no shortage of masks being worn.

Michigan went into a State of Emergency on March 10th due to the rapid spread of COVID-19. This was ordered by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, as well as the Stay-at-Home order shortly after. Under these orders many businesses had to close until the rate of COVID-19 infections were deemed managed, leaving many folks laid off and filing for unemployment. For businesses deemed “essential,” mask mandates were enforced along with other health and safety measures.

We've officially passed the first day of autumn, and it’s time to start getting into the season. One of my favorite things to do every year in fall is watch Over the Garden Wall, a mini-series that was aired on Cartoon Network in 2014. This is a show I constantly fall back into over and over again and I consider it one of the best shows of all time. It’s filled with beautiful fall scenery, a gorgeous art style, and just the right amount of morbidity to make you question if it really is for kids. The latter part of this article will contain very mild spoilers, so read at your own risk.

After doing my weekly look at YouTube’s Trending page, I came across a new video under the “Artist on the Rise,” section for “You Sad” by Tkay Maidza. While I had seen the name before, way back when she was featured on Troye Sivan’s Blue Neighborhood EP, I’d never really listened to the rapper’s music in-depth.

The Big Ten shocked the world last week when it announced that it was going to return to play an altered eight game season after cancelling their scheduled season in August due to COVID-19 concerns. The Big Ten season will run late October through early December, and end a week before the Big Ten title game. Since football is back in the midwest, could this mean the MAC will return too?

The fall semester is underway for most universities, where the effectiveness and the scope of their respective safe back-to-campus plans are being put to the test. And for many students and faculty, including the graduate student workers at the University of Michigan, the safety measures put forward are simply not enough.

Settle your quarrels, come together, understand the reality of our situation, understand that fascism is already here, that people are already dying who could be saved, that generations more will live poor butchered half-lives if you fail to act. Do what must be done, discover your humanity and your love in revolution.”

The 55th ACM Awards took place in three historic venues simultaneously in Nashville this year. Country stars performed to no audience in The Grand Ole Opry, The Ryman Auditorium, and The Bluebird Café. One may think that having no audience would make for a show that isn’t captivating, but this show was quite spectacular.

Last week I wrote an article about three teams I thought could over perform during the 2020 NFL season. I wanted to also include three teams I thought could underperform, but after thinking about it for a while, I decided that this topic deserved it’s own article. We talked about optimism and positivity last week, but now it’s time for a bit of pessimism with the teams I’m going to discuss.

Bowling alleys across the state were given the go-ahead to open back up Wednesday, Sept. 9, after a long stretch of being closed due to COVID-19. During the prolonged shutdown, many owners scratched their heads while wondering how to stay afloat due to the loss of income. Most bowling alleys are family owned businesses, so the effects were devastating to the local residents that ran these establishments.

Country singer Mickey Guyton has been on my playlist since the beginning of her career. She is back after five years since her last EP, “Mickey Guyton,” with the EP “Bridges.” This latest project from Guyton is a much-needed EP for not only the country music genre, but for the world at large.
