Folksinger Sam Amidon, born in Brattleboro, Vermont, is going on tour this winter to promote his new album, Lily-O. Written with the help of jazz legend Bill Frisell, Lily-O brings in a little something new while Amidon still holds onto the simplistic folk style he has had since his first album, Solo Fiddle.

Missy Higgins’ fourth studio album, released in early September, is a masterpiece of Australian covers. OZ is comprised entirely of hit songs from Australian artists, reimagined in her own light. The album expresses Higgins’ roots in her home country, and the book included with the album describes her connection to each of the songs she included on the LP.

An album that begins with a grainy “1, 2, 3” count off has either been recorded in someone’s basement or has a really bold start. Karen O’s striking vocals thankfully pull through the fuzzy-sounding recordings and give a bit of a charming feel to the overly simplistic style of the album.

The Rabid Whole, a band based in Toronto, takes a new twist on alternative rock with a more futuristic, electronic feel. The current band members joined together in 2011 to make two albums: “Autraumaton Remixed” (2011) and “Refuge” (2012). They are set to release a new EP, “Problems,” later this month.
