There is nothing to say about the screening of Teinosuke Kinugasa’s “A Page of Madness” except that it was a revelation. The film, from 1926, is notable for going against common editing practices of Japanese cinema at the time with moments that give a similar impression to soviet cinema. The screening was introduced by Abe Markus Nornes, a professor of Japanese film at University of Michigan, who discussed the history of the film and issues with screening availability. One of the problems mentioned was with the Michigan Theater itself in trying to book the film. After attending the screening, the effort was commendable for the life that it breathed into a classic Japanese silent cinema.

As a rule of thumb, because the offices are so similar to each other, governors have tended to make better presidents than, say, first-term senators. But, for almost the first two centuries of the United States’ existence, the profession that produced the most successful presidents aside from the political sphere itself was the military. After every major war, the country has elected a general as its President — George Washington after the Revolutionary War, Ulysses S. Grant after the Civil War, Dwight D. Eisenhower after the Second World War and very nearly Douglas MacArthur after the Korean War. Now, however, it seems as though the game is changing and businessmen are starting to run instead of career military men.

Echoes of the bouncing basketball reverberated through the 8,800-seat Convocation Center as Eastern Michigan University’s star guard Raven Lee scored 46 points, tying for the most this season by a NCAA player, against Miami (OH) last week. “The Convo” wasn’t quiet because Eagles fans had nothing to cheer about--EMU won 94-69. The Convo was quiet because there were only about 700 people scattered around the two-level arena.

I made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t talk about Trump, but in the face of yet another media feeding frenzy following the very real potential for “Trump-Palin 2016,” I’m breaking that this once to call out the proliferators of Trump’s politics. These people are as opportunistic as they are ideologically chameleonic, and yet I haven’t seen anyone giving them the ridicule they deserve. No, I’m not talking about Trump’s supporters, I’m talking about his detractors, especially those who make a living doing exactly what I’m doing now.
