After a year spent living on campus here at Eastern Michigan University, I am convinced that Ypsilanti has a sort of “quirky quota” it is obligated to fulfill. If the peculiarly shaped water tower landmark isn’t proof enough, just stroll into one of the many businesses lining the downtown or Depot Town area. You’ll be sure to find a surprisingly chill, typically artsy and nearly always eccentric vibe.

It’s the Rory Gilmore dilemma from season four of “Gilmore Girls,” where Rory can’t find a place to study. Her on-campus room is too distracting, the libraries have the wrong vibe and someone even steals her “study tree.” Just as Rory has to find the best environment for her to study, so do each of the students at Eastern Michigan University.

Fall is here, which means cozy sweaters, boots and all those fun—and functional—warm accessories. Light knit scarves are a seasonal favorite for good reason. The soft stretchy fabric is warm but not overly heating, and the long length combined with a crushable texture means lots of options for tying, knotting and wrapping.

As the new school year starts to roll in, one of the most important issues for students is how to decorate a dorm room. Not only can decorating those boring cinderblock white walls be fun, but it can also seem like a hassle and become expensive. Saving space, staying under budget and giving your dorm an overall style are all important to having an excellently decorated dorm room.

Few consumable substances have had as much of an impact on human culture as caffeine. Caffeine is regarded as the nation’s most popular drug, with 90 percent of the American population consuming some form of it daily. It has spawned an entire coffee shop culture, especially among college students looking for a calm spot to sit back, study and sip a cup of joe.

Staying simultaneously comfortable and fashionable can be a challenge. One of the most trying times (style-wise) for any young adult is back to school. Defining your personal style, enjoying the time it takes to get dressed and impressing your peers consumes your thoughts until midterms come along.

As a commuter student, I won’t be setting up a dorm, moving into a new city or getting settled with a new roommate at the start of my freshman year (although I do have to coordinate with my sister). But getting your space organized is important regardless of where you live.
