Despite heavy snowfall on Monday morning, people of all ages and walks of life packed the Eastern Michigan University Student Center Auditorium to hear Tim Wise’s keynote speech in commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr.
This past week The Eastern Echo got a chance to get an early peek at the North American International Auto Show, which takes place every year at the Cobo Center in Detroit.
What are the implications of the materialistic lyrics found in today’s hottest hip-hop hits? Eastern Michigan University student Ivory Harris Jr., one of the minds behind “Knowledge, Power, Respect: Hip-Hop Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,” was eager to find out. After conducting a study in November 2011, Harris discovered that 48 out of 50 songs on the Billboard hip-hop and rhythm and blues charts glorified alcohol or substance abuse, crime and violence and other negative themes.

“When someone says to me, ‘What is this film about?’ I say, ‘It’s about human rights, injustice and discrimination,’” Mark Schoen, producer of “TRANS,” said. “And what I’ve learned is the gender spectrum is much wider than I ever thought it was and you know it’s not just transgender. There’s intersex, there’s genderqueer. I think the important thing is that we have to, as a society, let people be their authentic selves, whatever that may be.”

With the bombardment of Christmas commercials, Christmas songs, Christmas TV specials and Christmas movies this month, it’s easy to forget that many, many people in America do not actually celebrate the holiday. In fact, there are millions of people celebrating very different religious holidays this month, one of which is happening this week—the eight-day Jewish holiday, Hanukkah.
Radio station WNIC 100.3 has been playing Christmas music since early November, but Eastern Michigan University’s Chamber Choir and University Choir the joined together to share and sing Christmas songs for students to enjoy at the Light and Life concert.
