Volunteer to give thanks

·

Thanksgiving is a time to give back and share with those around you and to be truly thankful for what you are blessed with. A favorite Thanksgiving memory of mine is a volunteer neighborhood dinner, clothes and food drive I use to help with.

Be kind, patient with retail employees this Black Friday

·

There are few things in this world that make me cringe. The phrase “Black Friday shopping” is one of them. I guess I can’t be too hard on the shopping aspect of the day because I’ve never been able to do it. I was always the miserable person working.

B.L.A.C.K. hosts its own version of ‘Family Feud’

·

On Monday, Nov. 18, Black Leaders Aspiring for Critical Knowledge held an event called “Family Feud: EMU Edition” in the Student Center Auditorium. Inspired by the original TV game show hosted by comedian Steve Harvey, B.L.A.C.K. invited a variety of different clubs and organizations to get involved in the festivities as part of B.L.A.C.K. Week.

Theater production brings magic of Narnia to life

·

On Friday, the Quirk-Sponberg Theater grew still as 7 p.m. drew near. The soft sound of children shushing was heard around the theater, bouncing off exposed brick walls as the lights dimmed. Children and parents sat in anticipation to see the world of author C.S. Lewis’ “Narnia” come to life as the Eastern Michigan University Theatre for the Young presented its production of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.”

With the Earth shattering, highly intense, mind blowing action packed film of “The Avengers,” leading up to “Thor 2: The Dark World” you might say that high expectations are set for the sequel of the original “Thor,” as is for any movie sequel.

Tasty side dish: Caramelized carrots

·

There’s something about the lowly carrot. The combination of juicy sweetness and crunchy spiciness in a raw carrot made it a perfect snack when I was a kid. I was in college before I discovered a version of cooked carrots that I liked: caramelized carrots.

Advice on staying organized as semester winds down

·

This point in the semester can make or break a grade. Staying on top of things can be much less stressful if you stay organized. Final exams and term papers are almost a month away, too close for comfort if you ask me. The good news is organizing and preparing for finals is something you can start doing now.

KATIE’S CRAFT CORNER: Quilting

·

Quilting, sewing pieces of colorful patchwork squares together to make a thick blanket, has gotten a, let’s say, “old-fashioned” reputation in recent times. A quick trip to upscale stores such as Pottery Barn and Anthropologie show that quilts themselves are more popular than ever.

The Wurst Bar features something for everyone

·

The problem I have with most pubs or bars is that I can either get great food or great beer, but never both. The Wurst Bar, 705 W Cross St., has solved that problem for me with a variety of menu options and a fantastic beer list. It ranks high on my list of local bars.

D.A.R.E event held at EMU

·

In a room of women, the one thing they all have in common is what also makes them different – a set of experiences that make each and every one of those women who they are. These women were gathered in room 360 of the Student Center for the “Do You D.A.R.E.” event held by Zeta Sigma Chi Mulitcultural Sorority. Dominique E. Moore, the public relations chair and website administrator of Zeta Sigma Chi, says the event is about motivating young women to overcome adversity.

Make your own muffins

·

Some weekend mornings when I’m still up earlier than anyone else in the house, I like to make muffins. They’re simple, delicious and perfect for an easy weekend morning.
