Homemade pizza isn't as complicated as it seems

I’m a sucker for home-cooked meals, especially ones that are made by someone other than me. Home-cooked pizza is an especially delightful surprise, one sprung on me recently while visiting my friend Adam.


Highland Cemetery offers lantern-lit tours in honor of Halloween

To make the tour more authentic, the only light provided is by a hand-held fuel lantern. During the tour, you are advised to watch your step, as you might trip over a tombstone. Highland cemetery is the resting place of many individuals who have had a great impact on Ypsilanti, including Mary Starkweather. Throughout the tour, James Mann explains the history behind the cemetery, using witty humor to also explain how some of the 15,000 “residents” passed.


'Paris Is Burning' screens in Student Center for OUTober

“Paris Is Burning,” the 1990 documentary directed by Jennie Livingston follows the ballroom culture in New York City and the African American, Latino and Transgender communities. With a vivid representation of gender bending, drag, and the art of vogue, it remains as one of the most legendary and revered documentaries in gay culture that continues to stand the test of time 23 years later.

Ugly Mug Café serves customers with devotion

Ugly Mug Café, located on Cross Street, offers some of the best coffee around. Ugly Mug was among the first to introduce third wave specialty coffee, the move to make coffee more of a high-quality food product akin to wine or chocolate. The scientific theory and culinary execution is used to make what they call a developed, sophisticated and complex cup of coffee. To them, it is just not coffee but an art form to be proud of.

Wiard’s Orchard offers many activities

At Wiard’s Orchard in Ypsilanti, there are countless activities to satisfy that comforting fall feeling. During the day hours you can take a short drive away from the college town to find yourself in a beautiful red, yellow and orange oasis of changing leaves.


Wind Symphony performs opening concert

Pease Auditorium swelled with music on a peaceful Sunday on Oct. 13 as the Eastern Michigan University Wind Symphony, conducted by Mary K. Schneider, kicked off its first concert of the semester with a piece from 1943 called “Commando March,” written by Pennsylvanian-born child prodigy Samuel Barber.

The hallways of both the Student Center and REC/IM proudly displayed Eastern Michigan University student posters Oct. 14 and 15 as part of the month’s ongoing events and displays of support for the campus’s LGBT community.

The summer before starting college, I became obsessed with homemade ice cream. I bought an ice cream maker and half gallons of heavy cream. and I made all kinds of flavors from strawberry-orange and coffee to raspberry swirl.

Zombie Ball brings undead fun to Ypsilanti

In the spirit of Halloween, the fifth annual Zombie Ball held Saturday Oct. 12 at Woodruff’s in Depot Town had everything a zombie could ask for – music, DJs and some undead fun. Such ghoulish figures like the Captain Cornelius Crumplecustard and his companion Beau Barranco were in attendance for the night’s festivities.

“Orange is the New Black” is the new show on Netflix that aired on July 11, 2013 and has the perfect recipe of comedy and drama. This witty series, created by Jenji Kohan, is roughly based on Piper Kerman’s experience in prison and the book she published afterword.
