EMU alums run delivery business

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if the food you craved was delivered right to your doorstep? Instead of getting dressed, starting up your car and wasting precious time, wouldn’t you want someone else to do all of the dirty work for you?

New ‘Evil Dead’ not like original

·

Producer and original director Sam Raimi and film star Bruce Campbell, who plays the film’s hero Ash, chose up-and-coming director Fede Alvarez to create a remake of the first in the “Evil Dead” series. This cult classic remake pulled in $1.8 million in late shows Thursday, creating more revenue than the original but leaving some fans with a bad taste in their mouths.

Insomnia Cookies comes to Ypsi

·

As finals come around the bend, there’s no question the amount of stress among students on Eastern Michigan University’s campus will rise exponentially. As students stay up late cramming, they’ll be limited to the amount of food available around and on campus, even if they’re craving something a little sweet. Insomnia Cookies looks to fix that exact problem.

‘Django Unchained’ gets four out of four stars for a strong cast and story.

Grindhouse Review: 'Django Unchained'

·

“Django! Django, have you always been alone? Django, have you never loved again?” Marching across East Texas, chained to several other slaves, a melancholy figure drags forth through the dust and grime of the scorching desert. On his way to his new owner’s estate led by the Speck brothers, the figure pushes forward while being pursued by an unknown being. He is a lone soul carrying a long, pale, bleak expression on his face. His name is Django (Foxx), and he’s an African-American slave caught in the middle of a slave tradition set in the year 1858, just three years before the Civil War.

The songs in Low’s new album, ‘The Invisible Way,’ work splendidly.

Matt on Music: Low's 'The Invisible Way'

·

“Mormons can’t rock. There, I said it,” a friend of mine quipped about Low after I posted my overview of the band on Facebook. In response to that statement, I must bring up the Butler brothers of Arcade Fire and New York Dolls bassist Arthur Kane, as well as the fact that Low isn’t a particularly rocking band. Their style is mainly based around minimalism, harmony and beauty; three things that many people, including my friend, love about The xx, and what I love about Yo La Tengo’s “Fade.”

‘The Wedding Band: A Love/Hate Story in Black and White’ is set in 1918 and follows an interracial couple in South Carolina.

Performance brings light to discrimination issues

·

Americans have come a long way in terms of diversity and discrimination. But in light of the recent movement for a high school in Georgia to desegregate their prom, we are reminded that despite it being the 21st century, discrimination still exists in America. Eastern Michigan University professor and director Wallace Bridges brings forth such issues in performances of “The Wedding Band: A Love/Hate Story in Black and White,” originally written by Alice Childress, this month on campus.

Chip flavors vie for your vote

·

Southeastern Michiganders are loyal to their Better Made brand potato chips, but when the regional favorite is unavailable, the sinfully salty taste of Lay’s is a good substitute.

	Low captivates with mind-blowing harmonies.

Matt on Music: Low

·

Low is a Duluth-based slowcore band fronted by married couple Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker, both practicing Mormons. Although Sparhawk and Parker have been consistent members since the band’s formation in 1993, they’ve changed bassists three times.

‘Silver Linings Playbook’ will play April 12 in the Student Center.

Oscar-nominated movie to play at EMU

·

Student acts in ‘Oz,’ prepares to graduate

·

There once was a man from Detroit with hair of grey and a hearty laugh whose talent and charm dropped him in the land of Eastern Michigan University. With drive in his spirit, he delivered his lines with delight and the desire to act on the grand stage. With a nod from Sir George Clooney, the legendary good man from Hollywood, he found his world turned on its side and emerged in awe with a yellow brick road that would lead him to a lifetime opportunity.

Sophomore Donald Lajiness was born with only one arm, but you couldn’t tell that by listening to him perform.

Guitarist overcomes disability to play well

·

Guitarist Donald Lajiness, a sophomore at Eastern Michigan University, steps to the front of the Alexander Music Building’s auditorium to a burst of ecstatic applause. He sits down in the proper classical guitar position— foot up, fretboard raised —and begins to strum the opening chord of the mysterious-sounding “Koyunbaba,” a modern piece with Turkish influences composed by Carlo Domeniconi. After a nearly flawless recital, the musician basks in the glow of his fellow music majors’ collective cheering and praise.

If you happen to be a fan of the Ann Arbor area and love to just walk around on Saturdays, be weary of a cloud of smoke as you inch closer to the Diag.

William Shatner’s ‘Seeking Major Tom’ is No. 5 on the list.

Ranked by hilarity: Worst album covers

·

Awful album covers are incredible. For every “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” or “The Velvet Underground & Nico,” there’s a few amateur (or even, sometimes, mainstream) artists whose album cover designs are just absurd. Sometimes, this turns out quite disturbing (every Cannibal Corpse album cover) or just creepy (“Julie’s Sixteenth Birthday”).

From most beautiful in Quirk to worst overall in Alexander, here are the best places to poop at EMU. Did we leave any out?

Best and worst places to take a poop at EMU (Yeah, we went there)

·

Pooping is the great equalizer. Everyone, no matter how beautiful, successful or talented, has to drop off the Browns at the Super Bowl once a day or so. When that primal urge strikes while you’re on campus, it can be difficult to scope out that perfect toilet for you. But have no fear! Here is a comprehensive comparison of the best and worst porcelain thrones at Eastern Michigan University.

Students’ April Fool’s jokes

·

Josh Parker, creative writing major— “My neighbor’s dad made a fake dummy of his son by filling a garbage bag with hay and putting his son’s clothes on it. Then he waited until his wife was coming home to dangle the dummy out of the second story window of his house. On first glance, it was really scary for her and she freaked out!”

Geoff Larcom: More than the man behind the emails

·

Geoff Larcom, executive director of media relations at Eastern Michigan University, is infamous for his emails. Multiple times throughout the day, members of the EMU community can anticipate an email waiting in their Eaglemail account from Larcom. But Larcom is more than the face of EMU updates—he’s a man who enjoys just being silly sometimes and loves to dance.
