Pipe damages Halle Library

Halle Library was closed for most of Monday and all of Tuesday after a water return pipe broke from its supports and fell from the basement ceiling, triggering the sprinkler system on its way down.

A red helicopter hovered low overhead, and police officers were at every intersection, as over 800 protestors, armed with signs and microphones, marched from Parker Mill Park to Governor Snyder’s home on a windy and overcast Martin Luther King, Jr.

Sexual assault on EMU campus

A safety notice was issued by the EMU Police Department at 1:44 p.m. Wednesday informing the Eastern community that a female student was sexually assaulted at 7:40 p.m.

Campus: Jan. 12 – An unattended purse was stolen between 10:30 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. in Ford Hall. An unattended black cell phone was stolen between 4:30 p.m.

Be aware of human trafficking

On Monday, Jan. 9, the Women’s Resource Center kicked off Human Trafficking Awareness Month with an informative panel on the issue. Reverend Bonita Laudeman, Danielle Hodgson and Special Agent with Homeland Security Investigations, Cara Rose, made up the panelists who discussed the dangers of human trafficking and what can be done to stop it.

EMU bus efforts continue

The need for more parking is a frequent demand in automobile-dependent Southeast Michigan. Last year, newly elected Student Government President Jelani McGadney and Vice President Jeffrey Chicoine took a fresh approach to this demand: to offer EMU students, faculty and staff the chance to buy a discounted Ann Arbor Transportation Authority (AATA) bus pass.

Online privacy concerns raised

Internet user privacy concerns are back in U.S. court again; the civil case revolves around little known tracking methods being used to gather users’ browsing histories, without their knowledge or consent, and potentially affects every Internet user. The lawsuit alleges KISSmetrics, a California based website analytics company, violated the 1986 Electronic Communications Privacy Act, by intentionally exploiting user software to bypass browser security settings, with the intent of intercepting and disclosing user information. The class action lawsuit filed by the KamberLaw firm, in the U.S.

Insight granted into EMU budget

At the Sept. 20 Board of Regents meeting, Eastern Michigan University’s Chief Financial Officer John Lumm reported that the university was suffering from a $4.6 million deficit and recently, he sat down with The Eastern Echo to provide further insight into EMU’s budget.
