Minority graduation, acceptance an issue

Data beginning in 2004 shows that at Eastern Michigan University the number of African American males graduating have plummeted drastically, causing officials to rethink educational programs in hopes of a future turnaround.

Enrollment to increase by fall '11

Enrollment for Eastern Michigan University’s 2011 fall semester stands at 14,576 compared to 14,351 last year at this time, according to a report from the division of enrollment.


	Amongst all of the higher education budget cuts going on around Michigan, EMU’s autism center gets $500,000 grant.

Eastern Michigan University officials are working to cover a $11 million deficit facing the school’s budget for the fiscal year, but in the midst of budget cuts, the Autism Collaborative Center is set to receive state funding.

Campus: May 22- A subject was arrested for an EMU bench warrant for seat belt violation at 3:21 p.m.


	All construction projects down Cross Street were planned in order to minimize disturbance to summer events being held around Depot Town.

Cross Street getting makeover

Ypsilanti’s Cross Street, a major commercial thoroughfare linking Eastern Michigan University to Depot Town is getting a $1 million makeover under the “Cross Street corridor non-motorized enhancement project,” which the Downtown Development Authority has been working toward for five years.

New high school curriculum by 2016

In an attempt to better prepare high school students for college education and the job market afterward, new requirements of high school students will take place by the 2016 school year in introducing the new merit system, which adds significant change towards the usual high school diploma, by including the Certificate of Attendance.

Congressman John Dingell, D-Mich., made a brief visit to Eastern Michigan University’s campus and met with a small number of editors from The Eastern Echo and The Washtenaw Voice to discuss pertinent concerns such as education and food reform.

DREAM Act returns to Senate

The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act was reintroduced to the Senate May 11, by Senator Richard Durbin (D-ILL) and, if passed in its current form, would allow children of illegal immigrants already in the U.S. to obtain a green card.

Orme continuing forensics' victories for Eastern

This April, at the University of Nebraska, a fresh victory was made by the Eastern Michigan Forensics team: winning the National Championship for impromptu speaking, something no EMU student has ever accomplished within the 40 years of the Forensics Program.

EMU website changes make steady progress

In early March, the Division of Communications at Eastern Michigan University agreed to a contract with OmniUpdate Inc., to implement a new content management system for use across all of EMU’s websites.

Pray-Harrold opening up

The renovation of Eastern Michigan University’s largest building, Pray-Harrold, will be completed by the 2011 fall semester.

Thirteen fellowships have been awarded for admission to Eastern Michigan University as part of the inaugural Michigan class of the W.K. Kellogg-Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship.
