Business and Finance Committee allocates full 7% of the budget to multiple organizations

The Business and Finance Committee allocated the full 7% of the budget to organizations with Model UN allocated $1,780, Club Hockey with $2,050 and with Club Baseball allocated  $2,050. The Southeast Asian Student association requested $500 and was allocated $250.

Vigil held in memorial of man, Trey Matthews III, shot to death in Ypsilanti Township

#HisNameIsTrey is being used to remember a young man killed in a shooting at Nancy Park. A vigil was held in memorial of Brian "Trey" Matthews III the third at Nancy Park. No suspect have yet been apprehended and the family is urging anyone with information to come forward.

21-year-old man fatally shot in local Ypsilanti Township park

Saturday night, on Jan. 11, a 21-year-old man was found shot to death in Nancy Park. Medical personnel tried transporting him to the hospital, but he died of wounds. No arrest have been made yet. 

Olds-Robb Rec/IM Building renovations adding visual appeal and modern updates by fall 2020

The Olds-Robb Rec/IM Building opened the third, fourth, and fifth floors at the end of November. The construction included adding new equipment and modern updates. The first and second floors are currently being renovated. Visual appeal and modernity are the main goals of the enhanced Rec/IM building. Construction is scheduled for completion no later than fall 2020.

Winter Fest draws students interested in joining student organizations

Student organizations gathered in the student center to seek out new members. Attendees could enjoy hot chocolate, music, get their caricature drawn by an artist and learn more about various student organizations.

Ypsilanti robbery occurs southwest of campus

The Eastern Michigan Police sent out an email to all students and staff early Wednesday about an off-campus robbery that occurred on the night of January 7. The suspect hit the victim with an unknown object and stole cash. The suspect fled the scene in a pickup truck. 

Halle Library Ground and First Floor Reopened

Halle Library ground and first floors will be open for regular use Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 9:00 a.m. On Tuesday, Jan. 7, Eastern Michigan University’s unexpectedly closed Halle Library temporarily due to an “emergency smoke alert”. 

Ypsilanti Township man arrested after stabbing 17-year-old girl multiple times

An Ypsilanti Township man was arrested Tuesday morning after stabbing a 17-year-old girl multiple times. It was thought to be a domestic dispute between a boyfriend and girlfriend by the police. The incident occurred Friday, Dec. 13.

New golf training facility fully funded by GameAbove alumni group

The Board of Regents approved the construction of a new golf training facility. The facility is 100% funded by the GameAbove alumni group. GameAbove donated a total of $8 million which covers construction as well as operating costs for the next 12 years.

Housing and meal plan rates to increase for fall 2020

The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents unanimously voted during the Regular Board Meeting to increase on-campus housing rates by an average of 2.94% and university meal plan rates by 2.95%. According to the university the increase in housing is aimed at helping offset “deferred maintenance costs [costs]“ related to on-campus housing.

EMU holds its fall 2019 commencement ceremony with over 2,300 students eligible to walk

EMU held its fall 2019 commencement ceremony on Dec. 15, 2019. In total, over 2,300 students were eligible to walk in the ceremony. U.S. Sen. Gary Peters was the commencement speaker, and he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree. 

Business and Finance Committee ends semester with generous allocations

The Business and Finance Committee allocated 7% of the budget to club hockey after giving them no funding at the previous allocation meeting. Senators also allocated a total of $3,508 to student organizations during the meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 10. This will be Student Government’s last meeting until after winter break. The next meeting will be a Senate meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

EMU awards special recognition to minority and international students

Students of color and international students received special recognition at the Multicultural Graduation Celebration for Fall 2019. Graduates received stoles of their choice to represent their culture, heritage and academic success. A Multicultural Graduation Celebration will also be held for Winter 2020 graduates.

Sigma Sigma Sigma and EMU’s physician’s assistant program "Break the Chain" event to raise awareness of human trafficking

On Wednesday, Nov. 20, Sigma Sigma Sigma and EMU’s physician’s assistant program held an event for women seeking education on human trafficking. The event was comprised of a documentary viewing and guest speakers.

Update: Swoop’s Pantry struggles to keep up with increased demand

Dr. Paul Leighton, who currently serves as the Chair of Swoop’s Advisory Board, addressed the board of regents on behalf of Swoop’s Pantry, saying that Swoop’s has seen a 50% increase in demand from last year. He has asked the board for additional storage space within Pierce Hall.

EMU Campus Sleep Out raises awareness about homelessness

EMU held the first annual Campus Sleep Out on November 21, in front of the university's Department of Public Safety. The event was intended to raise awareness about homelessness in Washtenaw County.

First Year Writing Program hosts the 37th Semiannual Celebration of Student Writing

The First Year Writing program hosted the 37th Semiannual Celebration of Student Writing in the Student Center Ballroom on Thursday, Dec. 5.
