Council hears proposal

The Ypsilanti City Council held a working session last Monday and heard a proposal from the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Department to put a recreation center fronting on Michigan Avenue and the Huron River on the 12 acres at the northwest corner of the 38-acre Water Street site.

Cyber-security Awareness

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano will speak at the Michigan Cyber Summit hosted by Governor Snyder and Eastern Michigan University on Friday at the EMU Marriott Eagle Crest Hotel and Convention Center. The event is the official kickoff of the National Cybersecurity Awareness month. EMU helped assist in the planning and staging of the summit.

Facebook gives users new features

Facebook released yet another set of modifications to its social networking site on Sept. 22. These major changes include features allowing its users to follow public updates by subscribing to other users, as well as adding a ticker that combines both the “top stories” and “most recent” sections into one. Blogger and self-proclaimed hacker Nic Cubrilovic has noticed these changes are not the only problems users are facing, though.

New budget concerns

Saturday, the fiscal 2012-year officially began and state appropriations for public Michigan colleges have slimmed down 15 percent, following a 2.8 percent decrease in 2011. Colleges across the state have scrambled to stay on budget by raising tuition and making cuts.
