Restaurant offers a tasty alternative for EMU students

It’s been said before: Trying new things is part of the college experience. So why hold back when it comes to your taste buds?

The Eagles Kabob, a newly opened restaurant located near the north end of Eastern Michigan University’s campus, offers an array of Mediterranean cuisine for an affordable price.

The menu is filled with flavorful, fresh Mediterranean meals with vegetarian and vegan entrées aiming to please.

Nothing on the menu is more than $15. Try a sandwich meal for $5.99; it includes any sandwich, soup/salad, drink and a dessert.

The chicken shawarma, one of the sandwich deal options, is already becoming a cult classic. The Eagles Kabob serves it as a hot pita filled with marinated chicken, garlic sauce, lettuce and pickles.

“It’s fresh and healthy; very well prepared,” said Nada Berry, a server/hostess.

She went on to mention the menu’s newest addition of smoothies made with real fruit. With flavors like mango, guava and papaya, the smoothies blend in with the restaurant’s menu.

The atmosphere is well suited for students, with features like Wi-Fi, delivery service and a spacious café motif suitable for club meetings or study groups.

“We welcome students,” owner Mike Baadarani said. “We’re conveniently within walking distance from Eastern. There’s a great atmosphere, good service, Wi-Fi and you can watch football games on the flat screen and meet nice people. The food is fresh, welcoming, and we go above and beyond to make everyone happy.”

That kind of service has been at the top of the list for the Baadarnis since they opened The Kabob mid-July, just in time to welcome students for the fall semester. They also own a coney island on Holmes Road called American Grille, where customers “ate up” the Mediterranean options. Baadarani claimed that’s what stirred up ideas for launching The Kabob.

“We only offer a few Mediterranean items on the menu at the coney island,” Baadarani said, “but their popularity is what inspired me to open the Eagles Kabob. We’re still only one-and-a-half miles from there, so people who enjoy it there can try this. We’ve also brought it closer to the school to offer an alternative to students.”

The Kabob is open from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturdays. Delivery or carry-out orders can be made by calling (734)484-5557. Visit campusspecial.com for more information on The Kabob and American Grille.
