Developer watches Depot Town dream go up in flames

Ypsilanti’s Depot Town district lost one of its most storied and controversial historic structures Wednesday morning when the Thompson Block Building was destroyed by fire.

Student prayer room could become offices

Eastern Michigan University is considering turning the Muslim Student Association’s prayer room in King Hall into an office and relocating the prayer room. The Muslim Student Association received an e-mail from university officials inquiring to what extent the room is used by the association.

EMU catches up with recycling efforts

Eastern Michigan University has been named a Military Friendly School for 2010 by “GI Jobs” magazine. This honor puts EMU in the top 15% of all colleges, universities and trade schools across the United States.

Red Cross needs blood donations

The American Red Cross blood drive is coming to Eastern Michigan University this Sept 21-23. The blood drive will be held between the hours of noon and 6 at the Student Center in room 300. Blood supplies in Southeastern Michigan are at emergency low levels this year.

Ypsilanti City Council cuts bus route

Ypsilanti City Council voted to eliminate the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority’s bus route five in the city Tuesday night. The move, along with scaling back hours for two routes and pledging to put bus funding in front of voters, was part of an effort to curb a $123,000 shortfall in the amount the city will be charged for its AATA purchase of service agreement.

On Friday, Eastern hosted “America Engages in the World,” a day-long forum intended to help recognize the influence America has in the world. Held in the Student Center, the forum included a variety of guests from multiple organizations.

Cross country snags a win

With three seniors on the men’s cross country team, Eastern Michigan is certainly a young. That doesn’t mean it can’t compete, though. As the No. 1 runner, senior Curtis Vollmar won and so did his teammates at the Detroit Titan Invitational on Saturday.

Northwestern was efficient and explosive in rolling up a 21-3 halftime lead over Eastern Michigan. Then it meandered through a listless second half and needed a 49-yard field goal from Stefan Demos with six seconds left to pull out a 27-24 victory.

A 17-year-old Ypsilanti Township resident is believed to be missing after the teenager allegedly took off Saturday evening with a man she met on the Internet. Erica Kennedy was last seen getting into a blue truck at approximately 11 p.m.

In order to refrain from overdosing on studying (it can happen), put the textbook down and pick up novel written by a fellow Eagle. “Aloha… A New Beginning,” written by women and gender studies student, Chevetta Burton is about friendship, love and trust; something college students either know too much about or will learn soon enough.

U.S. Ambassador Thomas Miller will speak at Eastern Michigan’s “America Engages the World: A Public Forum on the International Role of the United States” on Friday, Sept. 11.
