The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) has made an update regarding a fatal shooting that occurred on the night of Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, 2020 at the Aspen Chase apartment complex in Ypsilanti Township.

The shooting that left two men dead has been ruled a suicide and accidental homicide. One subject was killed due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The other individual was struck by the same bullet. The individual gunshot left both men dead.

According to WCSO spokesman Derrick Jackson, the Washtenaw County medical examiner ruled the event a homicide.

On the day of the incident police were dispatched to the scene due to a reported shooting. Upon arrival, police found two 22-year-old men had been shot. One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene and the other later died from his injuries at a Ypsilanti-area hospital.

“I know we don't often report on suicides, but with the amount of misunderstanding, confusion, anger, and sadness related to this case, I think it's important that the community understands what really happened,” said Jackson.

Multiple shots were not fired and both men only sustained one gunshot wound, as opposed to previous reports. Only one firearm and one discharged round was found at the scene.
