Exploring Ypsi’s downtown diner, pizza selections

Most students on campus go the same places over and over again: Benito’s, Jimmy John’s, etc.

Many do not even realize the hidden world, right around the corner. I can not count the number of people I found that have no idea that EMU has a free bus that goes from the main campus to downtown Ypsilanti every 20 minutes much less the great, and in my opinion, five-star restaurants right around campus and downtown Ypsilanti.
Here are a few first-class restaurants known by some, but should be known by all.

The New York Pizza Depot (NYPD) is one building away from Jimmy John’s off Perrin Street between Washtenaw and Emmit. The first thing you will notice when you walk in is the aroma.

Many people do not realize when a business makes a pizza for $5 they are focusing strictly on production and not flavor. NYPD is one of the few places left around campus that competes with the $5 Hot and Readys just by having a superior product.

NYPD has fresh cheese, fresh vegetables and lots of meat. With today’s standards, most people have forgotten what it means to have a pizza with so many toppings you can not fold it without spilling them. Keep in mind NYPD is quality, not quantity. Get ready to pay three or four extra bucks to get a pizza; but when you go, expect to get every penny’s worth.

Bombers Diner is located at 306 E. Michigan Ave., easy to find and within driving distance of the College of Business. Bombers Diner has been featured on the Food Network as one of Americas biggest overindulgences, and justly so.

Bombers has few items on its menu that do not take up two plates at a normal diner. Bombers is an early bird restaurant and closes at 2:45p.m. When your business has been featured on the Food Network, closes before 3p.m. and still makes a good profit, the results speak for themselves.

Wolverine Diner is a humble family restaurant on the block right next to the College of Business downtown at 228 West Michigan Ave. The Diner’s menu is built on a mixture of traditional diner food and home cooked meals, with new specials almost daily that rarely repeat themselves twice.

The Wolverine diner will probably have something new on the menu every single time you eat, which is one of the diner’s best qualities. For those who are adventurous, there will always be something new in Ypsilanti right around the corner.

Remember there are lots of places within walking distance of the campus. Do not get so attached to your daily routine that you forget to take advantage of the sites that makes Ypsilanti beautiful. Remember to go out and explore.
