The Eastern Echo, Eastern Michigan University's independent student-run newspaper, is hosting a Student Media Gala at the Ypsilanti Freighthouse on April 13 at 6:30 p.m.
As a way to help fundraise for student media at the university, the Echo hopes to inform the community about the newspaper's growth and plans for the coming years. Cellar Roots, EMU's literary magazine, will also be present at the event. The event is run by student media staff in hopes to raise money for the future of student media.
The event is a gala with formal attire with a taco bar and dessert table, awards for staff and alumni, as well as a silent auction for guests to participate in. The auction will include gift baskets including donations from EMU athletics, Eastern's bookstore, Campus Life, Bridge Community Cafe, World of Rocks, and more.
Kevin Allen, an EMU graduate and former Echo editor, will be speaking at the banquet, discussing his career at USA Today and other publications.
Echo Editor-in-Chief Layla McMurtrie will host the gala, speak about her time at the Echo, and announce who will be filling her position after she graduates on April 30. A video will be shown, made by Podcast Editor Jordan Boyd, to showcase the work and staff of the newspaper this semester and the goals that the organization wishes to reach.
Tickets can be purchased through EMU's ticketing website for $35 a person. A table price is also available for $220 using code "TABLE" at checkout with eight tickets, reducing the ticket price to $27.50 per person.
