The Taming of the Shrew — Friday, Saturday & Sunday, June 6-8, 2025

The Ypsilanti-based theater company Brevity Shakespeare is staging a performance of "Taming of the Shrew" that features two men as a the central characters.

The show's portrayal of Renaissance Italy is the only detail aligning with William Shakespeare's original story. The plot focuses on two wealthy ladies, financed by their fathers, who are pursued by 12 men. However, in Brevity Shakespeare’s version, the gender is reversed for all roles.

Theater lovers can watch the 90-minute comedy on different dates, including Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

The event takes place at the Ypsilanti Performance Space, 218 N. Adams St. in Ypsilanti. Admission ranges from $10 to $15, and tickets can be purchased through the Brevity Shakespeare website

Building a community around Mahjong Meetup — Monday, June 9, 2025

Join a weekly game of Mahjong on Mondays at the Whittaker branch of the Ypsilanti District Library! All adults are welcome, whether they are experienced Mahjong players or first-timers who just want to learn about the game.

The library offers Chinese-style sets for guest use, but players may bring their own as well.

Admission is free with no advance registration required.

The first upcoming meetup is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday, June 9. These meetups will occur every Monday between June and August at 5577 Whittaker Road in Ypsilanti.

Two fun facts the National Geographic mentions about Mahjong are that the meaning of the word Mahjong in southern Chinese jargon is sparrow, and the common belief for the bird’s name is based on the sound of the shuffled tiles. Also, the game originates from southern China and was developed close to the end of the Qing Dynasty, which was in the mid-1800s.
