The Eastern Michigan University women’s rowing squad made program history on Saturday, April 4, 2026, during a competitive home regatta at the EMU Rowing Course on Ford Lake. While the morning air in Ypsilanti remained crisp, the competition was fierce as the Eagles hosted Michigan State University in a dual that served as a critical yardstick for the program's progress. The day was defined by a monumental victory in the 3V8+ event, where Eastern Michigan snapped a six-year drought against the Spartans.
A wire-to-wire victory
The highlight of the regatta occurred early in the schedule during the 3V8+ race. The Eagles’ crew established dominance immediately, surging ahead off the starting line to take a lead they would never relinquish. In a display of endurance and technical precision, the Eagles maintained their advantage through the final strokes to finish with a time of 8:19.9.
Michigan State mounted a late-race charge to close the gap, but the EMU boat fended off the push to win by a 1.8-second margin, as the Spartans crossed the line at 8:21.7. This result was the tightest margin of the day and served as a direct testament to the squad's internal competition and growing roster depth. The victorious 3V8+ competing in the boat "Foxy" with blue oars was led by coxswain Ella Brzezinski and featured a powerful lineup including Kendall Moore, Adeline Horter, Lydia Risser, Lauren Tompkins, Adrianne Latunski, Hannah Brunton, and Sydney Fazekas.
Testing varsity depth against the Spartans
While the 3V8+ provided a historic highlight, Michigan State showed its experience and strength in the subsequent varsity races. In the 1V8+ event, the Spartans' top boat clocked a 7:10.7, finishing ahead of Eastern’s 7:33.3. The Eagles' 1V8+ lineup included coxswain Reyna Nyquist and rowers such as Abbi Lauth, Gabby Charvat, and Bryah Moriarty.
In the 2V8+ action, the Spartans set a fast pace early, posting a time of 7:47.7. The Eagles followed with a time of 8:08.5, utilizing a crew featuring coxswain Hazel Bown and rowers Stella Balcom and Lilly Kline. The 1V4+ race saw EMU’s crew (8:59.8) placing third behind two separate Michigan State entries, the 1V4 (8:33.0) and the 2V4 (8:45.1). Despite the losses in these events, the sources indicate that these races established clear performance targets for the Eagles as they transition into the most demanding portion of their spring schedule.
Building momentum for the postseason
The breakthrough against a major-conference opponent like Michigan State is viewed as a sign of continued growth for the Eagles. The ability to secure an event win against the Spartans for the first time since 2018 provides a psychological and competitive boost to a roster that has been steadily improving.
The Eagles do not have long to dwell on their success, as they are set to travel to Cherry Hill, N.J., for the Knecht Cup on April 11-12. This upcoming regatta will represent EMU’s first test against a multi-team field this spring, offering a broader perspective on where the team stands nationally. These experiences are all building toward the program’s ultimate goal: the MAC Championship, which will be hosted at home on Ford Lake. With the 3V8+ win proving the program's depth is reaching new heights, the Eagles appear poised for a strong showing in the championship phase.
