Looking to fill up your calendar? Ypsilanti offers a variety of local and affordable opportunities for residents and students. Listed below are a few of the upcoming events.

Depot Town Comedy Open Mic - June 17

Feel like laughing? 734 Brewing Company is back with its weekly comedy open mic, open to all comedians no matter their skill level or experience. Sets are scheduled in 5-10 minute increments, with exceptions based on request and the length of each night's sign-up sheet. Hosted by Depot Town Comedy, the event is set to run from 7:30-10:30 p.m., located at 15 E. Cross St., Ypsilanti. Admission is free. 

Observational Drawing Class - June 18

Hosted by the Ypsi Art Supply, Ypsilanti's resident affordable art supplies store, this blind contour event offers local artists, no matter their experience level, the chance to practice drawing figures without looking at the paper. Attendees can register online or show up at the door at the start of the event. While ticket prices range from $5-25, all attendees will be admitted no matter how much they can pay. To get some practice putting pencil to paper, stop by the Ypsi Art Supply June 18, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The store is located in Downtown Ypsilanti at 46. N Huron St. Attendees must be 16 or older. 

(Dead) Daisies: Music Performance and Juneteenth Fundraiser - June 19

Queer alt band "(Dead) Daisies" is set to perform to help raise funds for the Joy Project; a Black queer-owned space aimed at offering members of the community a chance to embrace indigenous practices, taste rarely grown produce and listen to stories about Black and Brown individuals' relationship with the soil it is grown on. The suggested donation is $10, with the event running from 8-10 p.m., and is hosted by the Water Tower Distilling Co., located at 23 N. Washington St. All proceeds collected from the event will be directly donated to the Joy Project. 

Ypsilanti Juneteenth Soulful Celebration - June 20

Hosted at the University Bank Commerce Center, Ypsilanti's 6th Annual Juneteenth Celebration Weekend aims to offer inspiration through culture, music, community and Black excellence. Headlining the show is Lady Sunshine and The X Band, an award winning R&B band first formed in 1994. The group is also joined by Marcus Cole, as well as a lineup of other featured performers. Running from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., the event is located at 301 W. Michigan Ave, continuing Ypsilanti's Annual Juneteenth Celebration 2026 theme of Juneteenth Rising: Liberation Through Unity. All ages are welcome, and attendance is free. 


Gray Connor

Gray Connor uses they/he pronouns, and has worked for The Eastern Echo since August 2024. They started as newsletter editor, then moved to managing editor of operations in January 2026. For their undergraduate studies, Connor majored in media studies and journalism with a minor in public relations. 

For Connor, the best part of the job is getting to know other people and collaborating with other students who are just as passionate about journalism and justice.
