The Ypsilanti Freighthouse's warming shelter hours will be extended over the Jan. 24, 2026, weekend, according to a news alert published by the city of Ypsilanti on Friday. The alert stated that the Freighthouse, would be open on Jan. 24 and 25 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Washtenaw County Office of Community & Economic Development announced that three county buildings will be opened as warming centers in Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor for Jan. 23, 2026. The announcement came shortly after a cold weather advisory was issued by the National Weather Service for the southeast Michigan area. Windchill temperatures on Friday are expected to drop to as low as 25 degrees below zero, creating conditions for frostbite and hypothermia.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office has released dash cam footage from a deputy-involved fatal shooting of a man who fled police in a vehicle chase in Ypsilanti. The sheriff's office previously confirmed that no firearm was found in the man's vehicle, despite initial police reports to dispatch that the man had a shotgun.

Ypsilanti Art Supply opened its doors on a crisp Friday evening in 2023. A line formed out the door, full of local artists who missed the independent art scene after the closing of Art Attack in 2013, which left Ypsilanti without an independent art store. After over two years of business, owner Megan Foldenauer says an idea that started as a passing thought is now becoming a reality.
