Many students that live in campus housing on Eastern Michigan University’s campus do not have the amenities of air conditioning, with 10 of the 12 residence hall complexes and all of the apartment complexes lacking air conditioning.

Report and Annual Fire Safety Report was released to the EMU community in an
email, containing factual numbers for any crimes that occurred on campus during
this time.

According to Eastern Michigan University’s Office of
Financial Aid, 76 percent of undergraduate students receive some type of
financial aid. This high percentage means that many students at EMU are eager
to fill out their FAFSA forms once they become available for the upcoming
school years to ensure that they receive the most aid that they can to pay
tuition bills.

Earlier this June it was announced that Wayne State University would no longer be making it a requirement for all students to take and pass a math class in order to graduate. The university is now leaving it up to the individual departments to decide whether or not they believe math should be included in each specific degree’s requirements. Not do the departments have the option to choose whether or not they want to make math a requirement for some students, but they also will get to choose what level of math the students must pass.

Scholarships are strongly sought out by college students today and usually the larger the award amount, the more challenging it is to obtain it. However, Eastern Michigan University sociology major Brett Zeuner, managed to land himself a federal fellowship in his field of study that has awarded him with a $50,000 scholarship from the Environmental Protection Agency.

According to mentoring.org, young adults who were at-risk for falling off track but had a mentor are 55 percent more likely to enroll in college, 78 percent more likely to volunteer regularly, 90 percent more interested in becoming a mentor later in life, and 130 percent more likely to hold leadership positions.

This past May, Chontae Sylvertooth, Interim Associate Director of Benefits and Wellness of Eastern Michigan University, distributed a document to the Building Administrator’s during their meeting. According to an online interview done with Brandi Below, a Wellness Center Intern, “the purpose of this document was to inform the EMU building administrators of the history and legal rational behind the request for an increase in lactation spaces on campus.”

This past April during the Michigan Campus Compact’s annual event at Michigan State University, Haley Moraniec, a social work major from Eastern Michigan University, was awarded the ‘Outstanding Community Impact’ award for her work in developing the Swoop’s Student Food Pantry at EMU.

Eastern Michigan University took fifth overall place in the 2016 National Forensics Association’s Competition that took place at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. EMU students were up against more than 500 competitors from more than 80 teams. Categories students competed in varied from Informative Speaking, Persuasive Speaking, Rhetorical Criticism and Poetry Interpretation.

Late Tuesday afternoon, an email was sent out to the Eastern Michigan University community from Interim President Donald Loppnow and all members of the Board of Regents addressing the rumors that have been buzzing the past several days in regards to eliminating football or dropping down to a lower division of the NCAA and dropping out of the Mid-American Conference.

The EMU Green Club is hosting Gathering Resources to Educate about our Environment and Nature Week March 21–26. Each day environmental friendly events will be held on campus to help promote the awareness of “going green” and help inform students about current environmental issues.

Eastern Michigan University’s 2014 Marching Band was recently recognized at the College Band Directors National Association 2016 North Central Conference Marching Band Video Showcase. Not only was it recognized at the showcase, but its video presentation of “Batman: A Celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Batman” was shown and commended as a national mode.

Eastern Michigan University’s Upward Bound program is a Federally-funded pre-college academic program designed to provide students from Ypsilanti Community High Schools and Ypsilanti New Tech High School with the skills and motivation to move on to attend a university to obtain a college degree. According to their homepage, “An Upward Bound student’s chance of earning a bachelor’s degree is four times greater than that of a non-Upward Bound student from a similar background.”

The Eastern Michigan University’s Michigan DECA will have their 70th Annual Career Development Conference, hosting 3,600 Michigan high school students from across the state at the Cobo Center in downtown Detroit March 11-13, 2016. This conference is especially unique to high school marketing leaders because it is the only conference in Michigan that allows them to prepare for their careers in the field and network with leading professionals.

Leaders from each of the Greek life councils at EMU traveled to Indianapolis to attend the AFLV Central, a weekend long conference, Feb. 4-7, hosted by the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values. All three Greek councils, the College Panhellenic Council, the Interfraternity Council and the National Pan Hellic Council were able to go home with awards.

This past Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016, part-time lecturers who are a part of the Eastern Michigan University Federation of Teachers got together to host a table on the main floor of the Porter Building from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to invite students and staff to sign Valentine’s Day cards to give to EMU administrators.

On Monday night, Feb. 8. between 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. an unarmed robbery occurred on EMU’s main campus at the north side of Pierce Hall. The victim was a male EMU student. He reported being approached by two subjects, one of which demanded his cell phone. The subject then punched the victim, causing a struggle, then the other subject became involved as well and the cell phone was captured. The victim was not physically injured during the struggle.
